    2. Of course deeds are a great source for providing family relationships, and for the narrowing down of an individuals date of death... the following is a great source for early NJ deeds: Colonial Conveyances: Provinces of East and West New Jersey, 1664-1794. Two Volumes. Summit, New Jersey: Crestview Lawyers Service, 1974. The Family History Library also has early records on microfilm for several churches in and near Montgomery Township, which you can request and view at your local Family History Center. You should also check the Somerset County Historical Quarterly, of which some of the volumes can be accessed online at both [1]hathitrust.org and [2]archive.org. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Marriage of John Van Voorhees and Janetje Kershow From: Jeff Ward <[3]jjward@scgc.org> Date: Sat, July 20, 2013 9:26 am To: "[4]dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com" <[5]dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com> Thanks, Nancy. 1. Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Marriage of John Van Voorhees and Janetje Kershow. Also Van Hoorn family
    2. Jeff Ward
    3. I got some very nice replies to my queries, including this one with advice that I will gladly accept, but a whole new can of worms has been opened. The Van Voorhees genealogy says John A. Voorhees was married to Jannetje Kershow. But an article published in NYGBR Record Vol. 68:400 (1937) identifies his wife as Lucretia Van Brunt. A somewhat scientific guess is that if his wife indeed was Jannetje Kershow, she may very well have been the daughter of David Cossart and Syntje Van Hoorn baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church in New York City on 15 May 1715. See the article by George Olin Zabriskie "The Jan Cornelisen Van Hoorn/Van Horne Family of New York and New Jersey," TAG: 170-177 describes the family and children of David Cossart and Syntje Van Hoorn at pages 175 and 176 and the date of the publications of the banns and marriage. He gives the names, baptisms and sponsor of all of their children and their known spouses. He describes David Cossart as the son of Jacques Cousse! au and Lydia Willems, the French Huguenot immigrants. The will of David Cosort was made 10 Jun 1736, proved 13 Jan 1740 and the inventory of David of Bound Brook was recorded 1 Jul 1741. It mentions wife Staintiah, son George, son Jacob (deceased), David and Francis; daughters Leah (deceased), Mary Williamson, Susanna Conine, Eleanor, Jane and Eve and three unnamed sons of his deceased son Jacob and their mother Wiiliamtiah. He says that Styntje Cussaar witnessed a will on 9 May 1759 at Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Mr. Zabriskie lists witnesses at the many baptisms and describes the child's relationship with its sponsors. In the case of Jacob baptized at the New York Dutch Reformed Church on 28 Jan 1702, witnesses are Jan Van Hoorn and Jannetje Cosaer, wife of Jacobus Goelet (child's maternal uncle and paternal aunt). At the baptism at the New York Dutch Reformed Church of Jannetje on 15 May 1715, sponsors are Jan Goelet and Lea Cosaar (child's sister). The aut! hor does not list a spouse for Jannetje. The identification of! Jannetj e Cossart (Kershow) as the wife of John A. Van Voorhees, later of Blawenburg, Somerset County, New Jersey is speculative. Jannetje is about the right age to be the wife of John A. Van Voorhees and we do know that some descendants of Jacques Couseau (Cossart) later adopted the surname Kershaw, Kershow or Cashow. As you can see from the description above, the spelling of the surname was rarely consistent. No married name is given for Jannetje in her father's will but she was had probably just turned 21 when the will was written so she may still have been unmarried. To complicate matters further, there is very scanty evidence for the birth, marriage or death of either John A. Van Voorhees or Jannetje Kershow. But descendants of Margaret Van Zandt are scratching their heads saying who was her Momma?
