    3. I was just prompted by a friend on this list to post a correction. I meant to be asking about Jannetje Kershaw who is listed as the spouse of Nicholas Van Zandt, not John A Van Voorhees. Stayed up way too late last night finishing a fine book I could not put down. I was more than a little confused this morning when I wrote this. Jeff Ward -----Original Message----- From: dutch-colonies-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:dutch-colonies-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jeff Ward Sent: Saturday, July 20, 2013 7:40 AM To: Dutch-Colonies-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Marriage of John Van Voorhees and Janetje Kershow I am wondering if anyone on this list has more information than I am posting here about this couple. I have quite a bit of information about the ancestors of John Van Voorhees and the descendants of John Van Voorhees and Janetje Kershow. I am one of those descendants. I should have bought the Van Voorhees Family genealogy when it came out in 2000 but I did not and it is not available in any library reasonably close to my home. This is all that I have about this couple. In 2000, the Van Voorhees Family Association published a family genealogy. There are references to John A. Voorhees and wife Janetje Kershow at pages 34, 102 and 103. Some early records for the Somerset County, New Jersey branch of the family are taken from very old family notes kept by David Voorhees. His record says that John A. Voorhees, born about 1714, married Janetje Kershow in about 1735 and that she was born about 1719, He was evidently uncertain of the date of her death but wrote 18 and did not compl! ete the date. We assume this means she died after 1800. Her parentage is unknown but many of the descendants of French Huguenot immigrant Jacques Cossart used the Kershow or Kershaw surname and dropped the Cossart surname. Others used the surname Cashow and many other variations. >From the History of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties, New Jersey (1881) Page 837--"John Stevens Van Voorhees came from Flatbush (or Flatlands), L. I. to Montgomery Township in 1738, purchasing a farm of 345 acres southeast of Blawenburg, on the road to Princeton." In 1754, he purchased what is known as the Voorhees homestead of 201 1/2 acres located in the north branch of Beden's Brook in the township of Montgomery. "Both John Van Voorhees and his wife lived to a grand old age, the former being nearly 100, and the latter eighty-nine when they died. John Stevens Van Voorhees married Jeanetta Kirshaw, at Long Island in 1730." Finally, can anyone on this list tell me anything about David Voorhees and the family record that he kept? My nineteenth century New Netherland ancestors in Allegany County, New York, (Dumont and Cole, formerly Cool or Kool) kept a family record that is extraordinary and the original is my possession. This is an invaluable record for a period when there a! re few public records available. They were actually filling out the family record as people were on their death beds, recording when they "took sick" and when they died.
