    1. Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Acquackanonk Patentees
    2. First, a big thank you to all who answered my request for the names of the Acquackanonk Patentees. This list is still the best of the best. I now have the names of the fourteen patentees and I filled in some blanks on my Doremus ancestor using both Nelson books, 1901 and 1920 plus information you generously shared with me. The reason for my original request. I am trying to trace a piece of property owned by my ancestor Cornelis Doremus, I began with the Garret Mountain Purchase dated 27 Nov 1711. The grantees were Frans Post, Jan Sip, Harmanus Gerritse, Thomas Jurianse, Christopher Steenmets, Cornelis Doremus, Peter Poulusse and Hessel Pieterse. It said the eight owners, were owners either by descent or purchase from the original Acquackanonk patentees. [Nelson 1901:330]. Since Cornelis Doremus was an "owner either by descent or purchase from the original patentees" I checked the Acquackaknonk Patent for his name. Cornelis Doremus is not listed as one of the original patentees of the Acq. Patent [Nelson 1901:63]. I could not find a deed where Cornelis Doremus purchased his property from one of the original patentees, but I found him in "Receipts for the Quit-Rents" [Nelson 1901:78,79] beginning 10 October 1707 to 17 April 1713. Cornelis Doremus died leaving a will dated 1714/1715 mentioning his property "aquecanund". The next quit-rent dated 20 May 1719 names his son Hendrik Doremus. I'm still working on the dates. Between the signing of the Indian deed dated 28 March 1679 and the signing of the Acquackanonk Patent on 16 March 1685, some of the patentees took possession of their lands. Thanks again, Ethel ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
