    2. Barbara: The "1678 House" may have stood on the site of the original home of the first David Demarest (ca.1620 - 1693) but the house, now at New Bridge Landing, is not architecturally correct for the 17th century. It is owned by the Blauvelt-Demarest Foundation and is rarely open, but may be seen standing between the Steuben House and the Campbell-Christie House on Main Street in River Edge. Yes, I have been a member of the Genealogical Society of Bergen County for several years. I'm also an officer of the Bergen County Historical Society, and a co-director of the Demarest Genealogical Society. I am the one who sent you an off-list query about whether the De Mare family descends from the Demarests. It is not a common variation of the surname.
