    1. [DUTCH-COLONIES] Jan Tiebout from Bruges?
    2. Trying to find proof for some statements in Riker's Revised History of Harlem 1) Jan Tiebout was born at Bruges [pp.68,69,393] 2) Took Oath of Allegiance to English on 20 Nov 1665. 3) Was a court messenger at Bergen in 1662. 1) Per Riker: "Jan Tibout was born at Bruges, (see p.69) [Riker:393]. Bruges was the last Flemish town as one approached the Dutch border ... originally Vlonderen, a Flemish term equivalent to Bruges (or Brugge, that is Bridges, as its Dutch people called it), taking its name from the many bridges in town .... " [Riker 68,69]. When his son Marcus married, he said he was from Gent in Vlaenderen. "Marcus Tibout, j.m. Van Gent in Vlaenderen, en Aefje Cornelis, Wed. V. Jonas Lievenszen, beyde tot N. Haerlem". Banns: 14 May 1698. Married: "den 29 May tot N.Haerlem." [NYDC 1:87] Is this the only connection to Jan Tiebout born in Bruge? 2) Per Broadhead. "Names of Dutch who swore Allegiance after the surrender of New York. . . October the 21st, 22nd, 24th, and 26th days 1664." Jan Tiebout is not on this list. [Broadhead V.3:74-77]. Where is the 20 Nov 1665 list? 3) Per Riker: "Jan Tibout was born at Bruges, (see p.69) and after emigrating lived for a short time at Fort Casimer, on the Delaware, where he was, in 1656, and whence coming, he and his wife, Sarah Vander Vlucht, joined the church at New Amsterdam in January 1660. There and at Flatbush (save while at Bergen, where he was court messenger, in 1662, and took the oath of Allegiance to the English, 20 November 1665), he spent most of the ensuing years till he came to Harlem. [Riker:393] Is there any proof he was a court messenger at Bergen in 1662? Regards,] Ethel ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
