Folks - all is not as dark as has been presented. 2 items - quoted from the NYGBS web site. "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society offers a Copying Service by mail. If you are requesting copies and (1) you know the title of the book, periodical, or other item and (2) you know the page numbers that you want (or if the book is arranged alphabetically, chronologically, or has an index) we can make the copies for you. Cost - The service fee is $5.00 plus 35¢ per copy plus the cost of postage. After we receive your request for copies, we will notify you of the total cost. Please mail your request to: The New York Genealogical & Biographical Society Library 122 East 58th Street, New York, NY 10022-1939 USA When we receive your payment, we will make the copies and mail them to you. Payment by check or money order should be made payable to The NYG&B Society. If paying by credit card, please provide your name as it appears on the card, the issuer of the card, the card number, and the expiration date. We accept Visa and MasterCard. Item 2 - quoted from the NYGBS website "Copyright Restrictions - Copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of copies and other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives may provide a copy. One of these conditions is that the copy is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user requests or later uses a copy for a purpose in excess of "fair use," the user may be liable for copyright infringement. Libraries reserve the right to refuse a request for copies if, in their judgment, it may involve violation of copyright law." As I read this - anyone can make a copy so long as it is for personal research - and will not be used for financial gain. If that still leaves one queasy - buy the copy from NYGBS who is the copyright holder.
