Herbert S. Ackerman lived in Ridgewood, Bergen County, NJ, and compiled genealogies of many of the oldest families in the county - who happened to also have been some of the oldest families in New York. He self-published, and there are not many copies. See the LDS, which probably has them all. He is not particularly respected as a genealogist. One of that generation who did not find the provision of source references necessary, he was also spotty with his family groups and made enough errors to unfortunately call his entire body of work into question. Still, we must be thankful to H.S. Ackerman. As long as we confirm his assertions elsewhere, he provided plenty of excellent clues for us to follow. ----- Original Message ----- From: Donna Stark Date: Thursday, March 1, 2007 8:01 pm Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Ackerman's "The Terhune Family" = S.O.S. I think the reason Herbert S. Ackerman is not highly respected as a genealogist is that he made a lot of assumptions, and some of them were wrong. He also generally did not document his genealogies or give sources. And as Nancy said, as long as we're careful to confirm what he writes, he did provide helpful clues to follow. And, aside from the genealogies, he did a massive job in documenting tombstone inscriptions, mostly in Bergen County, NJ. Pat >Herbert S.
