    3. All: The April 2007 issue of The Numismatist magazine has an article entitled, "Money of the Backcountry". I'm sure much of the Dutch colonial area was "backcountry" for the purposes of this article. While the author mentions early monetary instruments as well as direct barter, he says, "Money in the backcountry was defined by bookkeeping entries." Merchants traded a variety of goods and services, and the account book tracked outstanding balances.
