    3. ?I think Ridenour might be another common spelling if this is the German family I've seen of that name. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Janice Pranger" <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2010 9:42 PM To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Subject: [DUTCH-COLONIES] David Harris and CatharinaRidner/Redner/Riddenaer...1752 > > > > > > Does anyone have any information about this family, or about the others > named at these events? 3. "Op Belydenisse des Geloofs**" means On professsion of Faith. The person is now joining the church as a member. There could be several reasons why the person is professing his/her faith at this moment, including: -- Person is converting from another faith/sect. Has taken instruction, etc. -- Person has moved from another location, but has no certificate from their former church. The elders/deacons would ask questions until they were satisfied that the prospective member knew and understood the doctrine of the church, and intended to practice this form of religion. -- A young person has recently finished religious classes, etc., and is now joining the church as an adult member of the community. Usually the parents were members, and now thi person is grown-up enough to become a member him/herself. Best I can tell (and this MAY vary!) is this type of membership initialization occured when the prospective member was in her/his late teens. Also note with this last comment that I am referring to what I have observed in Dutch records of the seventeenth century, in the Dutch Reformed Church in the Netherlands, and NOT to any records of any Presbyterian Church of anywhere in NJ, or in the North American colonies. Religious leaders frequently held synods, conventions, etc, in which they sometimes reviewed and modified various aspects of their doctrine or function. But, the bottom line would still be: "Op Belydenisse des Geloofs**" means On Profosssion of faith. The person is now admitted to this particular church as a member.
