Family tradition is that our surname ( Heddy ) is Dutch however I have never been able to find anything similar in any online database. My ancestors were in the NY and NJ areas since about the mid 18th century and probably as long ago as the 17th century. If anyone has any clues or suggestions that might help me in my attempt to research this name I would be delighted to hear from you. ---Marc Heddy

Marc, I don't know a thing about the Heddy surname, but without knowing the individuals in your line, it would be difficult for anyone to comment on the origin of the name. I'd be interested in seeing who your Heddy ancestors are, where they were and when. Family origin stories are usually at least partially incorrect and occasionally completely imagined. The more specific you can be, the better the suggestions you'll get.
