Carol, This is in reply to your question from earlier today regarding Jane Brower who is said to have married Peter Buckhout ("Moses Vail of Huntington" page 42). On 2 Nov 1755, Peter Buckhout married Jean CHURCHILL, widow. Record of Marriages in the Presbyterian Churches of Rumbout and Poughkeepsie (NYGBR 69[1938]:287). I do not know with certainty who the Jane Brower mentioned in the Moses Vail genealogy is, however, I can suggest the following lead with the understanding that much more research is needed: Jannetje Brouwer, baptized 18 May 1719, Old First Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn, daughter of Adolphus Brouwer and Jannetje Verdon, married first Richard Truman (Hoffman, "Brouwer Corrections" NYGBR 69[1938]:177) and second, 14 Dec 1748, RDC NY, John CHURCHWELL/ CHURCHILL (Purple, RDC NA/NY Marriages page 179). Their daughter, Jannetje, was baptized at Tappan, 25 Feb 1753. I know of no other children for this couple and it is conceivable that John Churchwell/ Churchill could have died between his daughter's birth in 1753 and the marriage of "Jean CHURCHILL, widow" in 1755. However, also in the Presbyterian Church records of Rumbout and Poughkeepsie is the marriage of one John CHURCHILL, widower, and Rebecca Southard on 26 Jan 1756 (same citation as above). Therefore, in order to solve this puzzle you may have to research and sort out your John CHURCHILLs. Two other points regarding your initial inquiry: Adolphus Brouwer, the husband of Jannetje Verdon, is NOT a grandson of Everardus Bogardus and Anneke Jans. Adolphus is a son of Nicholas Brouwer and Jannetje Caljer, with Nicholas being a son of Adam Brouwer and Magdalena Verdon. Also, another source, Innes Getty, "Jacob Janse Flodder, alias Jacob Janse Gardenier" (Yonkers, NY 1947) page 55, states that Peter Buckhout, son of John Buckhout and Esther Fine, married Sarah GARDENIER on 2 Mar 1744 (MDC). The author states that Peter was b. ca. 1720 at Bushwick, bapt. 27 Aug 1723 (no source or location) and died in 1786. Which if correct, would imply that the estate of Peter Bookhout that was assessed at Rombout in 1770 belonged to a different Peter Buckhout. Therefore the Peter Buckhouts need to be sorted out as well. If nothing else I hope this at least supplies some leads as to what to research next. Regards, Chris Chester
Chris, thanks so much. The marriage of Peter & Jean (Churchill) Buckhout in 1755 in Rumbout is not new to me.. However, previously that marriage was attributed by Frank Doherty, "Settlers of the Beekman Patent" (and others), to a Peter Buckhout, the nephew of the one I noted below, son of John Buckhout who died 1770 (will written Aug 20, 1770 & proved Feb. 11, 1771, NY Co., NY Wills 27:553) in Fishkill. Not to say that is correct, but that is to whom it's been identified previously. It's always been a curiousity to me though that the names were so close so that is something to reconsider. For sure, there is a Peter Buckhout in the Tax Records living with or adjacent to John Buckhout in June 1769 and then is the "estate of" in 1770. It's highly unlikely that John included his son Peter in his will as he did, if Peter died in the months before, while we know that he had a brother named Peter.. Ah.. Much more work for me! I appreciate the information on Jannetje Brouwer's marriages as that is definitely 'new' to me and worth pursuing. I'm not surprised about the incorrect attribution to Adolphus Brouwer from the New Brunswick Archives records as it was only as 'others' believed and I also hadn't found anything to support that supposition in fact. As for the marriage to Sara Gardenier, I've certainly seen it attributed to Peter who resided in Dutchess Co previously by others .. I'm still cautious about that one as I have also found a hereto unknown "Peter Buckhout" baptised in 1729 in the Newtown Presbyterian Church: "1729 Jan. 5th Peter Buckhout baptized on Johannis Culvor's Acct Promising to do the Part of a Christian Parent to him." If you believe that this son Peter is the child of Pieter Boeckhout & Elizabeth Way (his 3rd wife) then it makes some sense. Elizabeth was related by marriage to Johannes Culver through Johannes' wife Sara Way. By 1729, both Pieter Boeckhout (he prior to 1722, most likely in NJ) and Elizabeth (she by Oct 1729, Newtown Presbyterian Church records) would be dead thus placing their child in the care of Johannes Culver. If that's true, then this Peter Buckhout (likely born between 1712-1715) lived in Newtown and NY City most of his life and is also a candidate to marry Sara Gardenier and die in NY City in 1786. All that being said, I am very curious about the 1723 baptism that was noted as that is something I don't have, and so will be scouring the NY church records again for that reference. Anyway, lots more for me to do -- Thanks again, Carol -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Chris Chester Sent: June 29, 2010 5:43 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Peter Buckhout-Jane Brower Carol, This is in reply to your question from earlier today regarding Jane Brower who is said to have married Peter Buckhout ("Moses Vail of Huntington" page 42).
