    3. Dear Carol and Chris, To help clarify at least one issue, Chris Chester wrote: > Also, another source, Innes Getty, "Jacob Janse Flodder, alias Jacob > Janse Gardenier" (Yonkers, NY 1947) page 55, states that Peter > Buckhout, son of John Buckhout and Esther Fine, married Sarah > GARDENIER on 2 Mar 1744 (MDC). > The author states that Peter was b. ca. 1720 at Bushwick, bapt. 27 Aug > 1723 (no source or location) and died in 1786. The marriage record for this Pieter Boeckhout (cited to MDC which is an old source reference no longer in use) can be found in the marriage records of the New York Dutch Church [Volume II of the Collections of the NY Genealogical & Biographical Society, edited by Samuel S. Purple (1890)].. [NY DRC 2:171] 12 Maart 1744; Pieter Buckhout & Sarah Gardenier, van Westchester; den 12 Maart 1744. Sara Gardenier (his wife) was baptized in the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow (Tarrytown) as follows: Zara #368; Bapt. Date: 21 Apr 1719; Parents: Jacob Gardenier, Zara his wife; Sponsors: Haremanis Gardenier, Zara Gardenier Source: First Reformed Church of Tarrytown (Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow) However, the Pieter Boeckhout (son of John Buckhout and Esther Fine) who was said (by Mr. Getty) to be born 1720 in Bushwick and subsequently baptized 27 August 1723 (somewhere) is somewhat of a puzzlement. More importantly, the baptismal record for this supposed Pieter Boeckhout (27 August 1723) is given at the very bottom of page 55, but the names of the parents are omitted. Here is the baptismal record, at Tarrytown, for a Pieter Boeckhout: Petrus #481 Bapt. Date: 27 Aug 1723; Parents: Jan Boeckhout, Maritie his wife Sponsors: Pieter Buys, Geertie his wife Source: First Reformed Church of Tarrytown (Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow) This Petrus (Pieter) was the son of John Boeckhout & his wife Maria Bancker, and married at Tarrytown to Aeltje Cuyper on 16 March 1745: From: First Record Book of the 'Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow' Organized in 1697 and now The First Reformed Church of Tarrytown, N. [Fifth Book, #189] Mar. 16, 1745 - Petrus Boechout, j. m., b. in Philips Burgh, and Aeltie Kupper, j. d., b. in Haverstroo. Both l. here. This Pieter Boeckhout was not mentioned in the will of his father, dated 20 January 1774 and proved 28 April 1785 [WNYHS 8:151/2] although it could well have been an oversight. John Boeckhout and Maria Bancker had a total of 16 children baptized at Tarrytown (1711 to 1735), and his death record reads as follows: Perry, William Graves, The old Dutch burying ground of Sleepy Hollow, in North Tarrytown, New York : a record of the early gravestones and their inscriptions. Boston: Rand Press, 1953, page 34 John Buckout who departed this life 10 Apr 1785 aged 103 years, and left behind him when he died 240 children and grandchildren; also Mary the wife of John Buck't died Aug 1755 aged 75 years My point is this. Mr. Getty appears to have been confused. Pieter Boeckhout, born 1720 in Bushwick, the son of John Boeckhout and Hester Fyn, was not identical with the Pieter Boeckhout who was baptized at Tarrytown on 27 August 1723. Pieter Boeckhout & Aeltje Cuyper had 2 children baptized as follows: Jan #1404; Birth Date: 19 Jan 1746; Bapt. 3. Pam, as always .. You are incredibly kind to share yet more information ! After I was re-reading my notes I also found the 1723 baptism for Peter Buckhout, son of Jan & Marytie Buckhout, in Tarrytown. It's not uncommon for the Buckhout branches, the one that went north into Westchester & primarily descends from Matthys, and the second that went from Newtown to Bushwyck and then on to Dutchess Co. via Pieter, both sons of immigrant Jan, to get confused! It's my mission to continue to try and unravel the two branches. I'm, of course, descended from the Dutchess Co. one which is the hardest to untangle as that branch did not (for the most part) attend a Dutch church (sadly) and so often the family members' baptisms, marriages etc. are scarce. Nonetheless, I will carry on -- just to summarize (in case anyone else is remotely interested). I think we can definitely say that the Peter Buckhout who married Sara Gardenier and was having children until at least 1760, is not the same one who married Jean (Jannitje) Churchill [possibly Brouwer] in 1755. That rules one out! My job to continue the research! Thanks again for your help, Carol -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Pamela J.
