Hi Cynthia, Just a bit more.... > > Deborah Schoonmaker was the widow of Jacob Cornelis Vernoy when she > > married Hendrick Vroom and when he died she m. Tjerck (Dirck) De Witt, > > also a widower. Abstracts of Wills Vol VII 1766-1771 pp 187-188 Liber 26: Page 345.--In the name of God, Amen. I, DEBORAH DE WITT, widow of Tyrck De Witt, being very sick this 18 of December, 1765. I leave to my granddaughter, Catharine Vroom, £50, to be paid in six weeks, "also a gold ring with a stone in it, and my silver snuff box." I leave to my granddaughter Deborah all my personal estate, and all my house furniture and bed. I make John Dumond and Johanes Steght, executors. Witnesses, Egbert Dumond, Jacobus De Lameter, of Kingston, Catharine Wells, wife of William Wells, of Kingston. Proved in Ulster County, before Joseph Gasherie, August 21, 1767. Abstracts of wills (Volume XVII. Corrections to Vol.VI-IX and XI) Vol. VII p 291 PAGE 188. 6 lines from top for Johanes Steght read Johannes Sleght. There is something very unusual about the granddaughters named in the above will of Deborah DeWitt. It almost sounds as if they are the daughters of Jacob Vroom and his wife Elizabeth. Could Deborah Schoonmaker's daughter Elizabeth Vernoy be the mysterious wife of Jacob Vroom who was listed as Elizabeth Vankee in the marriage record? And, no mention of Deborah's children, Catrina or Hendricus Vroom. I'm just thinking out loud, but something is not making very much sense. > The marriage record for *a* Jacob Vroom follows: > > Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey, > Vol. 22 > Marriage Records 1665-1800. Elizabeth Vernoy was baptized at Kingston 25 July 1714 [Hoes B#2237] and would have been of a suitable age to have married Jacob Vroom [baptized 2 November 1711 at Raritan] in 1744. Then, Deborah Vroom (baptized 1746 at Readington) would have been named after the maternal grandmother (which fits with Deborah DeWitt's will). Call it rampant speculation and how would you prove it? Hope I haven't muddied the waters too much. Just food for thought at this point. Regards, Pam Sears
GMTA Pam...I too had the thought that < < There is something very unusual about the granddaughters named in the above will of Deborah DeWitt. There is nothing on Catrina and Hendricus other than their bp, date except for Hendricus it also shows "prob. d.y.". There is nothing on Catrina and Hendricus other than their bp, date except for Hendricus it also shows "prob. d.y.". So THEN Jacob Vroom's wife Elizabeth is not a SCHOONMAKER but rather she is VERNOY. TA-DA........................Deborah Schoonmaker and her first spouse, Jacob Cornelis Vernoy, had a dau ELIZABETH bp. 25 Jul 1714 in the Kingston RDC, Ulster Co., NY. YOU DID IT PAM!!!!!!!
