I've been reading the mail list archives and given the confusion about the Ditmars, I'm almost afraid to ask. Almost. I'm trying to find evidence that George (Yoris) Ditmars (c. 1773-1855) is the son of Johannes (1739-1817) & Mary, that Johannes is the son of Dow and Aeltje, that Dow is the son of Johannes and Jannetje Remson, and that this Johannes is the son of Douwe and Catryntje. Or even evidence that this is inaccurate.I'm about to give up, but I thought I'd give the mailing list a try first. Any help you can provide will be much appreciated.
Dear J. Murray: It will be almost essential for you to obtain a copy of the "Dorlandt Enigma Solved" by Barbara Batth. There are, I believe it was , , , 32 Ditmars in the Index , , , and you'll be delighted. It helps to know that the Remson alludes to the given name "Rem" in my Van Pelt picture and was spelled Remsen in the 1600s and it means "son/daughter of Rem" I don't know what Rem mibht be short for, but you'll also find that all Dutch names are repeated often in families and the surnames must be mumbled and every possible spelling considered phonetically. The Dutch naming patterns will will be a great help to you . . I believe it is on the Olive Tree website.. I think you're going to learn of many cousins on Dutch Colonies site. Have fun!
