Judy, to perhaps reassure you a bit for the future, NEHGS has been making quite a push to expend their research boundaries, especially into New York. Their website and magazine are now http://www.americanancestors.org and American Ancestors (they do still also publish The New England Historical and Genealogical Register). They also have a website http://www.newyorkancestors.org or as they call it, a web portal from NEHGS. My concern as mentioned is a time goes by, many of those who either contributed and or know about the NNC are going to age, die or not going to be around, so that the next generation of descendants would never think to look in New England for New Netherlands ancestors, a real loss of golden information. New York, yes, New England iffy. Fortunately it does exist in some libraries, however. (Which can be seen here http://www.americanancestors.org/free-databases/#free) . His reply was that after consultation with his colleagues, they have decided to "continue on as they have been for the foreseeable future." He stated that they view NNC as a part of a "suite of journals" which include The Register, The American Genealogist, Virginia Genealogist, Essex Genealogist, Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, and a few others that are to be added in the near future. He states that the cost for creating a CD can not be justified as they believe it could not be recovered by sales of the CD. I had suggested that making NNC available as a CD or as a Free database would bring many New Netherland researchers who otherwise are not familiar with all that the NEHGS has to offer to the AmericanAncestors website. The reply here being that they already work hard to insure that the cost of membership is well worth the benefits received. To be honest, I don't have a rebuttal for the reply (and I'm certainly not going to badger anyone) and as a member of the NEHGS I can only add that I do believe that the $75 annual membership is well worth it. You will not find a better value among genealogy memberships or subscriptions. (Compare to about $290 for an Ancestry.com World annual subscription which includes many databases of lower quality, or a NYGBS membership which is also $75 but offers far less on their website). On the plus side, they have added Volume 13 to the Description page for NNC in PDF format. And apparently volumes 14 & 15 are coming. So right now, vols. 1-13 are available as PDFs at http://www.americanancestors.org/Databaselist.aspx but I am not certain if this can be accessed without a membership. You'll have to try for yourself. One other observation. Some who have contributed articles have stated that they had to sign a consent form and in doing so were of the belief that NNC was being made available free. As I mentioned above, vol. 13 is now online as a PDF. I had an article in v. 13, but never was asked to sign any type of consent form. So apparently, the NEHGS is working with the assumption that consent from individual authors is not required before making journals available to paid subscribers in digital format.
