    1. Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Baptismal Record Schenectady 9 Dec 1798
    2. Mary, Thank you--I didn't see this before I asked for it again. Let me make sure I follow the whole thing. baptism Dec. 9 1798 Harmannus Van Slyke (name as father) {this is the place where in the original his name was upside down, indicating an illegitimate birth, I was originally told}. Is the 8480 the number Kelly gave to the baptism in his listing? DOB is Oct. 6. I didn't remember whether the baby's last name showed up, so that's good to know too. Neeltje Schermerhorn (Schermerhoorn) is the mother. So the sponsors must be Evert Schermerhoorn and Elizabeth Schermerhoorn. I've learned not to assume that means a married couple, and at the time I didn't know who either was. Now I know that an Elizabeth was Neeltje's sister, and she married an Evart Schermerhorn. The family, like many early settlers, was very inbred--they went back to 1636 in NY, and Neeltje herself was descended from two of Jacob Janse's sons. So it would make a lot of sense to have her sister and her husband as sponsors, especially with an out of wedlock child, when the father married someone else between the birth and the baptism. I'm very grateful for the information. Thanks, Doris I've got the DOB as Oct. 6 and of , baby Clara Van Slyke (I wasn't quite sure whether the last name showed up in the record so that's good to know) ---------- Original Message ---------- From: Mary Van Orsdol <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Baptismal Record Schenectady 9 Dec 1798 Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2011 16:18:10 -0800 >From *Baptism Record of Schenectady Reformed Church: Schenectady, New York, 1694-1811* (New York: Arthur C.
