Of course deeds are a great source for providing family relationships, and for the narrowing down of an individuals date of death... the following is a great source for early NJ deeds: Colonial Conveyances: Provinces of East and West New Jersey, 1664-1794. Two Volumes. Summit, New Jersey: Crestview Lawyers Service, 1974. The Family History Library also has early records on microfilm for several churches in and near Montgomery Township, which you can request and view at your local Family History Center. You should also check the Somerset County Historical Quarterly, of which some of the volumes can be accessed online at both [1]hathitrust.org and [2]archive.org. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Marriage of John Van Voorhees and Janetje Kershow From: Jeff Ward <[3]jjward@scgc.org> Date: Sat, July 20, 2013 9:26 am To: "[4]dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com" <[5]dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com> Thanks, Nancy. I am wondering if anyone on this list has more information than I am posting here about this couple. I have quite a bit of information about the ancestors of John Van Voorhees and the descendants of John Van Voorhees and Janetje Kershow. I am one of those descendants. I should have bought the Van Voorhees Family genealogy when it came out in 2000 but I did not and it is not available in any library reasonably close to my home. This is all that I have about this couple. In 2000, the Van Voorhees Family Association published a family genealogy. There are references to John A. Voorhees and wife Janetje Kershow at pages 34, 102 and 103. Some early records for the Somerset County, New Jersey branch of the family are taken from very old family notes kept by David Voorhees. His record says that John A. Voorhees, born about 1714, married Janetje Kershow in about 1735 and that she was born about 1719, He was evidently uncertain of the date of her death but wrote 18 and did not complete the date. We assume this means she died after 1800. Her parentage is unknown but many of the descendants of French Huguenot immigrant Jacques Cossart used the Kershow or Kershaw surname and dropped the Cossart surname. Others used the surname Cashow and many other variations. >From the History of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties, New Jersey (1881) Page 837--"John Stevens Van Voorhees came from Flatbush (or Flatlands), L. This is an invaluable record for a period when there are few public records available. They were actually filling out the family record as people were on their death beds, recording when they "took sick" and when they died. The Van Horne Surname DNA Project is eight years old. At last, we have a documented descendant of Jan Cornelisen van Hoorn in the project, currently being tested. Normally, I would not make an announcement of this kind until all of the test results were in, but Family Tree DNA, familytreedna.com, is currently having its summer sale. The price for many of their tests, including the yDNA tests are available at a reduced price. Over the last eight years we have identified the genetic pedigree of Christian Barentsen and Matthys Cornelissen, the other two immigrants to New Netherland in the 1600s, whose descendants took some version of the Van Hoorn / Van Horn / Van Horne surname. If you are a Van Horne descendant, but do not know which of these men is you immigrant ancestor, we can now tell you to which family you belong. If you have a pedigree identifying your immigrant ancestor as Jan Cornelisen van Hoorn, and you are a male direct paternal line descendant of his, we are now able to confirm your immigrant ancestor. If you have questions, don't hesitate to write me either on the list, or privately at msvnhrn@jps.net. Marleen Van Horne Van Horne Surname DNA Project -- When the people, who made the music of your youth, begin dying of old age, you know that you, too, are old.

This is exciting news, and will provide another important document for all of us, but especially for those of us who descend from the Dutch who were in Brazil. As always, Cor, wonderful work, and much appreciated! I shall look forward to hearing more as it becomes available. Bryce Stevens Hello Jim and Chris, I have transcribed the document and it's a financial settlement the WIC had for it's investors and shareholders, because their financial situation was rather poor due to the war in Brasil and other events. They probably did sent a clerk to all the residences of those who invested, that would explain all the different kinds of ink and pens. If you're interested I could translate it, but I now started deciphering all the names and signatures. That is interesting to me. I have been trying, with no success, to locate online digital images of maps that are part of the WIC collection held by the National Archive of the Netherlands... while surfing National archives site please let me know if any of you com across any maps associated with the West India Company. Thanks in Advance! Jim -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [NEW-NETHERLAND] [DUTCH-COLONIES] What is this WIC document From: <[1]jarm@nycnuts.net> Date: Wed, July 10, 2013 2:21 pm To: [2]dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com, [3]new-netherland@rootsweb.com For those interested in settlers in Brazil, as well as other locations, you might want to check out the note books of the Amsterdam Chamber of the WIC, especially the note book that covers Jan 1635-Dec. 1636. Van Laer had transcribed entries from that book that pertained to New Netherland, but I don't think he transcribed any of the other records. I believe in the actual records you can still see the check marks and parenthesis written in pencil that Van Laer added to the original note book to indicate the record entries that pertained to New Netherland. You can find the actual records here: [1][4]http://www.gahetna.nl/en/collectie/archief/ead/index/nodes/YToxODp7aTo wO3 M6NjoiYzAxOjIuIjtpOjE7czo2OiJjMDE6Mi4iO2k6MjtzOjY6ImMwMToyLiI7aTozO3M6NjoiYz AxOjIuIjtpOjQ7czo2OiJjMDE6Mi4iO2k6NTtzOjY6ImMwMToyLiI7aTo2O3M6NjoiYzAxOjIuIj tpOjc7czo2OiJjMDE6Mi4iO2k6ODtzOjEyOiJjMDE6Mi5jMDI6MC4iO2k6OTtzOjEyOiJjMDE6Mi 5jMDI6MC4iO2k6MTA7czoxODoiYzAxOjIuYzAyOjAuYzAzOjAuIjtpOjExO3M6MTg6ImMwMToyLm MwMjowLmMwMzowLiI7aToxMjtzOjEyOiJjMDE6Mi5jMDI6MS4iO2k6MTM7czoxMjoiYzAxOjIuYz AyOjEuIjtpOjE0O3M6MTI6ImMwMToyLmMwMjo4LiI7aToxNTtzOjEyOiJjMDE6Mi5jMDI6OC4iO2 k6MTY7czoxMjoiYzAxOjIuYzAyOjguIjtpOjE3O3M6MTI6ImMwMToyLmMwMjo4LiI7fQ%3D%3D/e adid/1.05.01.01/node/c01%3A2./open/c01:2.#c01:2. And you can find the translations of those records that pertain to New Netherland made by Van Laer in the NYG&B, vol . 49, a copy of which can be found here: [2][5]http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89067948836;view=1up;seq=259 Jim -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] [NEW-NETHERLAND] What is this WIC document From: "BStevens" <[3][6]brycestevens@comcast.net> Date: Wed, July 10, 2013 1:17 pm To: <[4][7]dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com> This is exciting news, and will provide another important document for all of us, but especially for those of us who descend from the Dutch who were in Brazil. For those interested in settlers in Brazil, as well as other locations, you might want to check out the note books of the Amsterdam Chamber of the WIC, especially the note book that covers Jan 1635-Dec. You can find the actual records here: [1]http://www.gahetna.nl/en/collectie/archief/ead/index/nodes/YToxODp7aTowO3 M6NjoiYzAxOjIuIjtpOjE7czo2OiJjMDE6Mi4iO2k6MjtzOjY6ImMwMToyLiI7aTozO3M6NjoiYz AxOjIuIjtpOjQ7czo2OiJjMDE6Mi4iO2k6NTtzOjY6ImMwMToyLiI7aTo2O3M6NjoiYzAxOjIuIj tpOjc7czo2OiJjMDE6Mi4iO2k6ODtzOjEyOiJjMDE6Mi5jMDI6MC4iO2k6OTtzOjEyOiJjMDE6Mi 5jMDI6MC4iO2k6MTA7czoxODoiYzAxOjIuYzAyOjAuYzAzOjAuIjtpOjExO3M6MTg6ImMwMToyLm MwMjowLmMwMzowLiI7aToxMjtzOjEyOiJjMDE6Mi5jMDI6MS4iO2k6MTM7czoxMjoiYzAxOjIuYz AyOjEuIjtpOjE0O3M6MTI6ImMwMToyLmMwMjo4LiI7aToxNTtzOjEyOiJjMDE6Mi5jMDI6OC4iO2 k6MTY7czoxMjoiYzAxOjIuYzAyOjguIjtpOjE3O3M6MTI6ImMwMToyLmMwMjo4LiI7fQ%3D%3D/e adid/1.05.01.01/node/c01%3A2./open/c01:2.#c01:2. And you can find the translations of those records that pertain to New Netherland made by Van Laer in the NYG&B, vol . 49, a copy of which can be found here: [2]http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89067948836;view=1up;seq=259 Jim -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] [NEW-NETHERLAND] What is this WIC document From: "BStevens" <[3]brycestevens@comcast.net> Date: Wed, July 10, 2013 1:17 pm To: <[4]dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com> This is exciting news, and will provide another important document for all of us, but especially for those of us who descend from the Dutch who were in Brazil. We are most fortunate that the Harrodsburg Historical Society has created a repository for Low Dutch books, Papers, Manuscripts, Original wills, deeds, marriage documents, Family Genealogies etc. This involves a lot of work on their part as materials have to be cataloged and processed, but the are willing and happy to do so. In the long run, this will create a large Archives of items, specific to those families who migrated from New York, New Jersey to Conewago Dutch Reformed Church area near Gettysburg in York and Adams Counties as well as Berkeley County VA, now WVA, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and west ward. Should you be interested in donating your collection or copies of important papers in your collection as well we Books etc. contact Amalie Preston % of Harrodsburg Historical Society, P. O. Box 316, Harrodsburg, KY 40330-0316 or telephone 1-859-734-5985. Believe it or not, sending books or other library materials, MEDIA MAIL, through the post office is very inexpensive. Believe it or not, I recently sent off three boxes containing about 36 books plus deeds documents etc. and I believe it only cost about $50.00 for the entire mailing. Creating this Archives will benefit researchers in the future and if something should happen to you, you will be secure in the knowledge that your relatives will not toss your valuable collection into the trash or toss their hands up at your collection and because they have no time to sort through everything, simply get rid of it. You are correct in that this is a document from the Directors of the Oude West India Company in Brazil. At the top of page 2 is a date which appears to be "xen Febrúarij Jaers xvij Sestenvijftich" or 10th February in the year 1650. I've looked at several of the documents relating to the West India Company but not many in Brazil so this looks like an interesting document. Thanks Chris. I had missed the reference given that pertains to this document that gave the date as 10 februari 1656. It also states (with translation), "List of subscribers to the capital of the WIC stating the deposited amounts. February 10, 1656. 1 piece"... so does this mean that these were investors, or creditors, vs debtors? -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] [NEW-NETHERLAND] What is this WIC document From: Chris Brooks <[1]brookskcmo@gmail.com> Date: Tue, July 09, 2013 7:17 pm To: New-Netherland <[2]new-netherland@rootsweb.com> Cc: [3]dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com You are correct in that this is a document from the Directors of the Oude West India Company in Brazil. At the top of page 2 is a date which appears to be "xen Febrúarij Jaers xvij Sestenvijftich" or 10th February in the year 1650. I've looked at several of the documents relating to the West India Company but not many in Brazil so this looks like an interesting document. Does anyone know what these two documents are and can you discern a possible date? They look to me like they pertain to Brazil and are a list of people who owe money to the WIC.
