    1. [DUTCH-COLONIES] Cornelius A. Vanarsdale
    2. Glee Krapf
    3. Who was the above person? Who were his parents or what Van Arsdale line did he belong to. I cannot find him in my data base based on his birth in 1744. I was there and took pictures of some of the tombstone so might have on of his stone. There were quite a few Corneliuss in my line. Hope someone can tell me more about him and his family. Thank you, Glee

As to sources he says "Among the manuscripts in the collections of the Koninklijk Nederlandsch Genootschap voor Geslacht en Wapenkunde at the Hague is a Family Register of the Varlet Family... From the records contained therein and a search in the archives of the city of Utrecht and other collections the following pedigree has been assembled." >> Later I got a chance to see the > extensive article on the family by Edwin Purple in NYGBR starting in > vol 9, p. 54 and continuing for several issues. > > That was April, July and Ocober 1878, and April 1879. The court case I cited in 1655 deals with a complaint by Wolfert Webber against the daus. Judith and Sarah. Could there be another > way Augustine and George could be brothers in law? > > I am fairly satisfied that Anna was an older sister of Jannetje's and > the others. here is another goodie about Anna Verlet and siblings: Three years ago, I had estimated birth dates for the 5 generally listed children based on their marriage dates (not knowing when Casper and Judith were married). I had dates between 1627 to 1640. Now with the 1615 marriage date and Abraham born in 1616, it looks like there is plenty of room for more kids between Abraham and Nicholas. So, both Anna and Guiliam could fit there. Judith must have been fairly young in 1615 to still have a child in 1639. I bet Sarah was the last. > This record probably exists somewhere in New Amsterdam/New York > archives, but it was also recorded in Northampton/Accomack county > Virginia. > > "On 9 August 1652, Mrs. Anna Varlet the wife of Mr. George Hacke > dwelling in Virginia as having power thereunto by letters from her > said husband, she declared to have bought from the seller a certain > pinnace named "The Fortune" lying at anchor at Amersterdam in the New > Netherlands for the sum of 1300 guilders. (Northampton, VA Wills, Deeds, > etc., Vol. 4:113). I didn't find any record of this in New Netherland, but could have missed it. There were some court cases before the Council at about that time that mention that Anna Verlett was wife of George Hack. See CDM and NYHMs: Dutch Council Minutes 1652-1654 [vol. V]. 1. Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Gunsaulus possible European research
    2. Pamela Turner
    3. Thanks for all the encouragement and details for my upcoming trip. Note to Barbara Rogers and any other Manuel Gunsaulus descendants. I have read with special interest much of the speculation about the religious origins of him. He is actually not my blood ancestor but my childrens', whose paternal line includes Manuel Gunsaulus (the grandson or great grandson) and Janntje Van Etten through their daughter, Eleanor "Lena" and her husband, Jacob Wolfe. It is Eleanor's husband's and father's origins on which I am concentrating. The Gunsaulus origins fascinate me, personally, because of my own Jewish family lineage. I have conducted a lot of research on the Crypto Jews and read recent material and books about the Inquisition, which highlight more current events and discoveries. Many of the original forced, "fake converts" from Judaism to Catholicism later did abandon the Catholic doctrines for other options. Dutch Reform or Protestantism would have represented a compromise, even temporarily, to a hidden Jew. The lure of the freedoms allowed within the Dutch religious order would have been very attractive. And many Spanish Jews who were expelled, emigrated to Portugal as a first refuge. Another historic topic which I came across in a Netherlands tour guide book, indicates that the North Brabant area, from which Jan Van Etten came, was long dominated by Spanish occupiers who controlled the area in earlier centuries. Perhaps after coming to the North Brabant area from Spain or Portugal, an early Gunsalus had felt safe enough to abandon Catholicism in this more tolerant community. DNA testing might provide the only non-refutable evidence, as it doesn't seem that there were any Jewish religious habits (Shabbat and holiday, kashrut law observances) that were carried over to subsequent Gunsaulus generations. However, a pattern that I've noted in many Gunsaulus descendants is a strong dedication to religious life, community service and learning, which may be inherited or taught traits. 1. Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Enquiry about Dutch/Belgian European research and libraries
    2. Pamela I have been to the Gemeentearchief in Amsterdam few times. It's pretty easy to use since the people there do speak english and will give you limited assistance finding records, how to copy them and some help with translations. There is an area with microfiche copies of the D,T, B (Doop, Trouw and Begraven records - Baptisms, Marriages and Burials) as well as citizenship records. They have other rooms with different record types like notarial records and other later records. This archive is only for Amsterdam. Keep in mind that most European archives and some libraries charge a daily research fee as well. If you plan on searching records for a specific location outside of Amsterdam you'll either have to go to Den Haag (the Hague) to the National Archive or determine which province they were from and go the the provincial archive. In some instances, some towns have their own archives so depending on the local you may have to go this route. So your research depends completely on where your ancestor lived. Have you done any preparation before you go? Do you know the locations you want to search and what records are available? The LDS Library put out very good guides for research in the Netherlands. They are by Province and then by municipality. They generally list the church records available as well as some of the other records like court and manor records. If you are looking at church records I would suggest checking the LDS Library for microfilm copies first. I do a lot of research using these records and generally they are very comparable to the ones in the archives. Note that at most archives you don't get to see many of the early records but microfiche copies, especially baptisms and marriages. I don't know if Dutch churches retain their parish records or if they are deposited in Church or Federal archives so make sure they are available before you show up at your ancestors parish church and find that they don't keep the older records on site. Also, note that archives have very limited hours, generally 9-4 and many times are closed on Mondays, national holidays and 'other days' for special events. So investigate and plan your time, especially if going to small archives. The Staatarchiv in Lemgo, Lippe for example, is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday but Thursday is the only day for general searches, i.e. you can check Findbuchs and request information from the attendants for that day. For the other days, you must either write, email or call ahead and give them the titles and archive signatures of the documents you wish to see. Not what we Americans are used to but normal in Europe. Hope that helps. Has anyone else in the group had any hands on experience conducting research in Europe and know sites that provide instructions and research info? Thanks for your assistance in my plans. 3. Hi, That was it. I just typed "Low Dutch" and got the Mercer Co. records. They have from 1639 up. It is wonderful. If you try to print it is very small. You may have to use a magnifying glass to read the pages you print.
