    2. Barbara: The "1678 House" may have stood on the site of the original home of the first David Demarest (ca.1620 - 1693) but the house, now at New Bridge Landing, is not architecturally correct for the 17th century. It is owned by the Blauvelt-Demarest Foundation and is rarely open, but may be seen standing between the Steuben House and the Campbell-Christie House on Main Street in River Edge. Yes, I have been a member of the Genealogical Society of Bergen County for several years. I'm also an officer of the Bergen County Historical Society, and a co-director of the Demarest Genealogical Society. I am the one who sent you an off-list query about whether the De Mare family descends from the Demarests. It is not a common variation of the surname. I want to share with you how to make this sign £ for the English and early New World currency pound sign. I think you will enjoy using this. Some years ago, Charles M. Cook, a fellow Hageman, Hegeman genealogist, shared with me how to make the English Pound Sign using the Numeric Key pad to the right of the key board. To do so hold down the Alt key beside the space bar and type 0163 at the same time and you will get £. Can someone tell me the answer to this? In 237.17.5 - the 237 would obviously be (pounds) £237, but does the 17, then, stand for shillings and 5 for farthings? 2. Donna Stark
    3. The Low Dutch Church "The Old Mud Meeting House", (where most of the Low Dutch who left NJ and PA came) is close to me. They are planning a reunion soon. I need to get my papers to see exactly when. I plan to attend and have some books about the Dutch and my families I plan to take there. It is Sept. 28, 29 & 30, Shelbyville, KY. That is only 30miles from my home but I plan to stay at the Best Western in Shelbyville. It is open to anyone who is descended from the Low Dutch. Some of all the families came to Ky. in 1780. My Montfort, Banta, Shuck, Vories, and others were in that group. If you know anyone descended from the Montforts, I Have a picture of John Calvin Montfort who was born in 1776 in Pa. He is probably age 70 or more at the time. I also have a picture of James and Francis Vories, both born in Pa. late 1700's. I visit their grave every year and put flowers on them on Memorial Day. Donna Best Western: 502-633-4400, ask for Dutch Cousins and they will give you a discount. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara de Mare" <barbarademare@yahoo.com> To: <dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 06, 2007 10:17 PM Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Dutch Houses > OK Donna, yet another question dfor after your migraine is gone--what is > the Dutch Cousins Reunion? 2. Yes. In fact the Demarests' "1678 House" (now at New Bridge Landing) originally stood where the Elks Club is now. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ray C Date: Friday, April 6, 2007 8:07 pm Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] New Bridge, NJ To: dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com > That must be down by the Elks Club, just north of the Little > League field. > > > -----Original Message----- > From: dutch-colonies-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:dutch-colonies-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of > nancyterhune@optonline.net > Sent: Friday, April 06, 2007 7:53 PM > To: dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] New Bridge, NJ > > The French Cemetery is behind the New Milford borough hall on > River Road. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Donna Stark > Date: Friday, April 6, 2007 7:34 pm > Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] New Bridge, NJ > To: dutch-colonies@rootsweb.com > > > The Demarest Supplement to the second edition does not tell > > where the > > cemetery is. 3. Hi Howard, I seem to remember that when Google announced their project of bringing books on-line that one of their partners was the New York City Library. Probably the Research Division. If so, that should include their genealogical collection, most of which is now beyond copyright protection. I've noticed that HeritageQuest, which is being pulled from genealogical society subscriptions, has many on-line books imprinted on the cover page as being from that same collection. So I throw this idea out to the list. What if, as some of us suspect [me, anyway], that Ancestry.com put pressure on HeritageQuest to pull back those genealogical society subscriptions in order to drive individual subscriptions back to Ancestry, only to find that Google was recreating that same database and becoming a free genealogical powerhouse? Anybody got a friend at Google? Ask them to sub-index the appropriate books they're copying under a genealogical heading so we can sort them more easily. See: http://books.google.com/books?vid=0TBQOIngGiheymL6Ja0JozW&id=Pk0OAAAAIAAJ&pg =PA1&lpg=PA1&dq=inauthor:berthold+inauthor:fernow#PPR3,M1 They have more of the NJ Archives series, but (as seems usual for them) it is hard to find which ones they have and where they are.
