I've a family of De Harts - Elias of 1677 - Monmouth County NJ. Possibly same family. No Johns or Jonathans noted, but one Jannetje who might possibly have been named after her paternal (Elias) grandmother. Maybe a few hints if you'd like the a printout of the family group. Does anyone know how long it took a ship to get from the Netherlands to Brazil in the 1640s? I'm assuming it was at least a few months. Thanks, Steve

Howard, Your lineup of the children of Caspar Varlet looks pretty good. There was also a Francina, who married Peter Heijbloem on 2 August 1642, Amsterdam. In Amsterdam marriage index, file #458, p. 128 there is: Francina Varlet, assisted by her father Casper Verlet, with Peter Heijbloem assisted by his father Francois Heijbloem. The full text of the marriage intentions would probably give Francina's age. I think Frans Heijbloem came to New Amsterdam --he appears in the NA baptism register: 1651 Jan 01; Nicolaes Verleth; Abraham; Abraham Verleth, Francosicus Heybloom, Judith Verleth > Also, in Amsterdam I found the bap. of Anneken, the daughter of > Daniel Verlet and Sara Stafmaker (the same wife the article shows) > on 19 June 1636. I wonder if she is the Anna Verlet who married > George Hack. Anna Varlet, the wife of George Hack, is Anna the daughter of Caspar. Anna Varlet and William are identified in records concerning Anna's purchase of a pinnace in New Amsterdam in 1652. This record of the sale is written rather awkwardly, but it shows that Anna is the sister of William Varlet, who is delivering the payment, while Nicholas, Anna's brother and Caspar, her father are putting up security. Here's the deal: "On 9 August 1652, Mrs. Anna Varlet the wife of Mr. George Hacke dwelling in Virginia as having power thereunto by letters from her said husband, she declared to have bought from the seller a certain pinnace named "The Fortune" lying at anchor at Amersterdam in the New Netherlands for the sum of 1300 guilders. The payment of the aforewritten moneys agreed upon the security as aforesaid is to make payment and the before written pinnace with the appertentions belonging thereunto the aforesaid is by William Varlett in the name and on the behalf of his sister the buyer thereof... securities Gespair Varlett and Nicholas Varlett" I think the citation I have for the above is incomplete --I have only: Northampton, VA Wills, Deeds, etc., Vol. 4:113. I think Anna was probably one of the oldest of Caspar's children. Hi Steve, From: "Steve Brewer" <slbrewer@fuse.net> Sent: Monday, April 09, 2007 2:31 PM Subject: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Travel time to Brazil > Does anyone know how long it took a ship to get from the Netherlands to Brazil in the 1640s? I'm assuming it was at least a few months. One actual journal of such a voyage has survived. It is the journal of the voyage that Jesse de Forest and Jean de le Montange made in 1623. This journal (probably kept by Montagne) is in vol. 2 of the book, A Walloon family in America : Lockwood de Forest and his forbears 1500-1848 : together with a voyage to Guiana : being the journal of Jesse de Forest and his colonists 1623-1625 which is available on line at HeritageQuest. They left Texel on 16 July 1623 [p. 191]. But they didn't leave Plymouth until 31 August [p. 199]. They arrived at the mouth of the Amazon on 20 October 1623. [p. 223] So, 50 days. You can read the whole thing to see if they had good winds or bad. Based on times from the Netherlands to New Netherland, I would have guessed about 2 months; so I think their voyage was in the range to be expected. Regards, Howard hswain@ix.netcom.com

Hi all, I recently took another look at the Casper Verlet family. (Also, Varlet and maybe Verleth or Varleth) Recall our last discussion here: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/dutch-colonies/2007-03/1173120928 and see links to the follow-on messages at the bottom What's new is I've now searched the online Amsterdam baptisms at: http://gemeentearchief.amsterdam.nl/archieven/genealogie/doopregisters/zoek/index.nl.html Casper Verlet m., in Utrecht, Judith Tintenier on 17 Oct 1615. [NYGBR 71:118] Children: Abraham bp. 6 Oct 1616 in Utrecht [see Liz'es message of 5 Mar 2007] wit: Guillaume Tintenier, Magdaliene, wid. of Abraham Tintenier Nicholas Guillaume Jannetje born in Utrecht [NA RDC marr. record] Marija bp. 7 Nov 1627 in Amsterdam Judit bp. 8 Nov 1629 in Amsterdam Catrijna bp. 2 Sept 1631 in Amsterdam Jacus bp. 24 Nov 1633 in Amsterdam Catrijna bp. 22 June 1636 in Amsterdam Sara bp. 1 May 1639 in Amsterdam For now, I'd assume Nicholas and Guillaume were born in Utrect. According to the above Record article, Casper was the son of a Nicholas. That sons Nicholas and Guillaume are in this family has been discussed here before. Also, Caspar had a brother named Daniel (above article). Also, in Amsterdam I found the bap. of Anneken, the daughter of Daniel Verlet and Sara Stafmaker (the same wife the article shows) on 19 June 1636. I wonder if she is the Anna Verlet who married George Hack. Regards, Howard hswain@ix.netcom.com

Donna, I'd like to see the Rapalje and Vreeland. Thanks very much. I had posted in this thread about a mention of Lambert Huyberts and Huybert Lamberts MOLL, quoted from an article written in Dutch. Upon further reflection, I would like to revise one of my comments now. I wrote: > ...There is a website which discusses > Lambert Huybertsz Moll and his family --parents as well as children. > Among the mass of ideas presented there is a reference to some > documents which can be found in archives of Amersfoort, ca 1618 to the > 1630's. > > One of these documents was quoted as saying: > "Immers, op 8 januari 1631 wordt een Lambert Huybertsz Moll, > scheepstimmerman en boer op Long Eylandt genoemd, in wie wij wel een > zoon van dit echtpaar mogen herkennen." > > --which was translated as: > "For, on Jan 8th, 1631, a certain Lambert Huybertsz Moll, > shipcarpenter and farmer on Long Island (Eylandt) is mentioned and > recognized as a son of this couple." > > I mainly agree with the translation... I still mostly agree with this translation, except I had failed to notice the modifier in here, "mogen" which means 'may,' 'might.' So the sentence would be more accurately translated: BECAUSE [[of whatever preceded this sentence]] on Jan 8th, 1631, ONE Lambert Huybertsz Moll, shipcarpenter and farmer on Long Island (Eylandt) is mentioned, IN WHOM WE MAY WELL recognize a son of this couple." In English this is a little awkward but is now more accurate. This does not change the concept that Hubert Lambertsz Moll and Geertgen Cornelisdr are thought to be the parents of Lambert Huyberts Moll, but the writer is hedging the bet just a little. If the author had been 100% certain, s/he would have said that Lambert Huybertsz Moll "IS en zoon van dit echtpaar." And so I wanted to make this clarification. Also someone inquired about my use of a family name "van Schaick" in connection with Hubert Lambertsz Moll's wife, Geertgen Cornelisdr. I hadn't filtered that out either --that notion came from the online article. I have no information which either supports or disproves this family name in connection with Geertgen Cornelisdr. So I am just correcting the archives here too. That's all for now, Liz J
