    3. You can get it from the society New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. Check their website. If I recall correctly it is New york family.org, but I could be off a little. You can Google the Society to find it, which is what I generally do. Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. 1. Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] * Mary Ann HOPPE(R) SKAATS BANTA - who was she? by protzy41
    2. Thank you Pam, This is certainly puzzling. One would certainly think that Theodore M. BANTA would list his step-mother (Mary Ann) in his SAYRE Genealogy. Could George Olin Zabriskie have gotten it wrong? It is certainly true that Mary Ann (Price) (Hoppe?) married a BANTA. Was it Theodore's father, Albert Z. BANTA? Or perhaps another BANTA? The 1850 census from NYC shows: 1850 – New York, NY – 9-WD, ED-1 – 424 – 840 – pg. Line 18 – 2 family house - Albert C. [sic] Banta, head, age 52, M, Feed Store, b. NJ; Mary Ann Banta, [m. 1842], age 49, F, b. NY; Emily M. Banta, age 30, F, b. NY; Sarah Banta, age 26, F, b. NY; William Banta, age 21, M, Clerk, b. NY; Pucah [=Jacob] Banta, age 19, M, Clerk, b. NY; Lavina Banta, age 25, F, b. NY; Theodore Banta, age 16, b. NY; Mary Banta, age 14, b. NY; Thomas C. Banta, age 25, M, Clerk, b. NY, Aug 6, 1850. These are the children listed for Albert Z. BANTA (from his first wife, Sarah Ann Sayre), by Zabriskie. I assume that the middle initial "C." was a mis-hearing for "Z.", by the Census taker, as the children fit those given by Zabriskie. And here is his (second) wife, Mary Ann. Albert died 4 years later: Obit - NYTimes - Sep 1, 1854 - “In this city, on Thursday morning, Aug 31, of consumption, Albert Z. BANTA, in the 56th year of his age. His friends, and those of his family, are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, from his late residence, No. 34 Troy st., on Saturday morning Sept. 2, at 8 o’clock. His remains will be taken to Hackensack, N. J. for interment.” The widow BANTA shows up in the 1860 census, living in the same house as her daughter (Deborah (Rivers Skaats GESLAIN) and son-in-law (Charles T. GESLAIN)'s family; with Sarah Gilbert who was her widowed dau from her earlier marriage: 1860 – 1st Div, WD-7, Brooklyn, NY, ED-1 -2 – 3 – 2 family house - Charles T. Geislin/Geeslin, age 39, M, Conductor, $500, b. NY; Deborah, age 33, F, b. NY; Victor, age 13, M, b. NY; Charles, age 9, M, b. NY, at school; Joseph, age 7, M, b. NY, at school; Margaret [Gilbert], age 5, F, b. NY; Adelaide, age 3, F, b. NY; Bartholmew, age 1, M, b. NY. [next family, (4) same house] Sarah S. Gilbert, age 34 [b. 1825-6], S, $100, b. NY; Mary Banta [mother of Sarah, by m1.], age 59, F, b. [1800-1] [She m. A. Z. Banta, 1842.], NY; Deborah, age 10, [b. 1849-50]. F, b. NY; Louise, age 5, b. NY. [Jun 7, 1860]. Her BANTA step-children, now aged 24-40 are not with her. She died after 1870 (found in 1870 census). Bob Protzmann ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pamela J. MARY2 SAYRE (DANIEL1) She married JOHN OWEN. <snip> I'm not sure what you mean. I do not own the Sayre book, but it is available on-line at Heritage Quest. I have accessed the book again, and find the following: Banta, Theodore Melvin, Sayre family : lineage of Thomas Sayre, a founder of Southampton; New York: (1901), page 68 Sarah [not Mary] Sayre, daughter of Daniel Sayre (who was possibly the son of Samuel Sayre), and Rebecca Bond, married John Owen, a weaver of Elizabeth, N.J. John Owen's will was dated 21 Mar 1761; proved 6 Jun 1761 [NJ Wills, G 399], and in it he mentions 6 children: Mary, Rebecca, Hannah, Sarah, Daniel and Jedediah. No dates of birth/marriage/death are given for any of them. The line is not carried forward. Since you provided no dates or location in your query, I have no idea if this is a match (or even comes close). Regards, Pam Sears
