    3. Hi Renee, Glad I could ID that strange name. I "heard" it right away as 'Syckles' because in Dutch, the 'ch' sounds as a 'k', like in our word 'school'. Thanks. Of course would be interested to know if these records exist, and more about Lambert Sickels and his wife. Five children in the 1698 census, but only two baptisms known. And Mary Jans, another parent-less wife. Thanks again, Liz J

    3. Liz, Thank you so much for that information! Sickels! I never even thought of that. My mind just drew a total blank on it. Now Lambert has an identity, thanks to you. Perhaps a > dispute had arisen concerning the distribution of Jan Jacobs van Rheenen's > and Geertje Gysberts' mutual estate. No marriage record Auke and Geertje has yet been found. Neither does there seem to have been a prenuptial agreement. That omission may be the reason why Auke included Geertje and her daughters, Lisbet Jans and Eva Jans, all mentioned by name, in his will which was written in 1694. The will makes no mention of a Maria. From the baptismal records for grandchildren for both Auke and Geertje, it would appear that Geertje and Auke probably married as early as 1682 and definitely by 1684. In 1682 both witness a baptism: Flatbush DRC 1682 May 21; Jan Stevensz, Femmetie Aukes; Auke; Auke Jansz, Gerritje Gysbrechts. The mother in this baptism is Auke's youngest daughter. Geertje has no relationship that I am aware of to Jan Stevenszen van Vorhees, the father. So I am assuming that she is present at this baptism because she is now the wife of Auke Janszen. An earlier baptism in 1681 which they both attended is inconclusive because it was for a child of Jan Aukes (Van Nuys) and Evertje (Eva) Jans. Thus it would be excepted that both parents, whether or not they were by then married to one another, would be present. Flatbush DRC "1681 Jul 17; Jan Aukesz, Evertje Jans; Jan; Auke Jansz, Geertie Gysbrechts." By 1684 we can rather safely estimate that they were married because at yet another baptism we find Geertje using her husband's first name as if it were her patronymic: Brooklyn DRC: Brooklyn Church records, p. 123: "1684, January 20 Jakop; parents: Dirck Zutvin, Elisabet Jans; witnesses Auke Jans, Geertje Aukes" Since this is the Lisbet Jans who was Geertje's daughter and the subject of this little study, there is no reason for Auke to be present except that he is now married to Geertje. {Source: A.P.G. Jos van der Linde, translator and editor, under the direction of the Scholarship Committee of The Holland Society, "Old First Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn, New York. First Book of Records, 1660-1752", New York Historical Manuscripts:Dutch (The Genealogical Publishing Company , Baltimore, MD, 1983), p. 123]. As stated above, Auke wrote his will in 1694. It wasn't probated until 1698. Since Auke had left his estate to Geertje for the remainder of her life and requested that she not have to give an accounting of the estate, the evidence seems to be that his request was honored and Geertje died in 1698. All of which is a long, round about way of saying that it would appear that Jan Jacobszen van Rheenen probably died about 1680-1681. Geertje then married Auke sometime between 1682 and 1684. Joan Sholl Francis, on the webpage link that you gave, gives a marriage date for Maria Jans and Lambert Sickels as 1690, which is probably an estimate from the baptism of their first known child. If that date is correct, then she too would have been a step-daughter to Auke Janszen for at least 6, possibly 8 years prior to her marriage. Unless Maria and her new husband, Lambert, had managed to become completely estranged from the rest of the family, she should have been named in Auke's will also. Furthermore, there is no evidence of her in the baptismal records for the children of either of the two women who would have been her sisters. So at this point, circumstantial evidence suggests that Maria was not a child of Jan Jacobsen and Geertje Gysbrechts. Another possible scenario is that since Maria and Lambert are said by Francis to have settled in Bedford, perhaps they purchased the farm of Jan Jacobszen, "late of Bedford", from Auke and Geertje. The lawsuit may have an attempt by Lisbet and Eva to try to collect money still owed on that purchase. This is just speculation, of course, but it does give an alternative interpretation that has a small measure of possibility to it. > Maybe other records will turn up in the various records of Flatbush > concerning Lambert Sickels, that would give some indication of who his wife > had been. Or more about what the lawsuit concerned. This record says that Jan Jacobsen was "late" of Bedford. I intend to see if Bedford retained town records and if they are available as a part of this series of microfilm. Renee L. Dauven

    3. Hi Renee, Thank you for the record and the second wife of John Lake. This is very interesting, and maybe for more than Johnson-Van Nuys descendants, and the Sutphen descendants, and so forth. Maybe it would also interest some of the Sickels descendants. Lambert Sickels (one of several sons of Zacharias) was from Albany, and came to NY sometime before 1692, when he and wife Maria Jans baptized a son Johannes in the NYDRC. Here is a collection of data about him, collected some 10 years ago by Laurie Lightfoot: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SICKLES/2002-06/1023901198 And a RW website has more info, including what appears to be an extract from Riker's "Harlem", on Joan School Francis' database: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=joanfran&id=I06834 This 1712 case in Flatbush is just such a minimal entry, but very interesting. It concerned two daughters of Jan Jacobs aka van Rheenen (Elizabeth and Eva), against Lambert Sickels. He was born ca 1666 (apprenticed 1680 in Albany). He is approximately the same age as Elizabeth and Eva, daughters of Jan Jacobs aka van Rheenen, who start having children in the late 1670's and early 1680's. Lambert Sickels had five children by 1698 (Long Island census). Jan Jacobs aka van Rheenen had married Geertje Gysberts, and after his death, Geertje married Auke Jans van Nuys, the father of Jan Aukes van Nuys, Eva (van Rheenen) Jans' husband. They were in Brooklyn as early as 1662, when Jan Jacobs van Rheenen and Geertje Gysberts baptized a son Jacob in October 1662. See New Netherland Connections Vol. 2 (1997), p. 35. Now I wonder if Maria Jans, wife of Lambert Sickels, had been another daughter of Jan Jacobs aka van Rheenen, who had died before 1712. Perhaps a dispute had arisen concerning the distribution of Jan Jacobs van Rheenen's and Geertje Gysberts' mutual estate. Maybe other records will turn up in the various records of Flatbush concerning Lambert Sickels, that would give some indication of who his wife had been. Or more about what the lawsuit concerned. 3. Hope you all are having pleasant holidays. I have added one new document to my website. Although it holds interest to a much smaller group of researchers than the previous lists might have held, it will be very interesting to that smaller group. The document is an entry in what appears to be the Court of Sessions Minute book for a court held in Flatbush on 30 April 1712. It seems to be the only record of a second marriage for John Lake, son of John Lake and Anne Spicer. John is known to have married Neeltje Claeszen as his first wife. At the time he worte his will in 1723, he makes reference to his wife, Mayke. This document shows that he had a another wife between these two. Thus this second wife was Elizabeth Jans. From the context of the law suit and the identity of her co-plaintiff, she is to be identified as Lisbet Jans van Rheenen, daughter of Jan Jacobsen (van Rheenen) and Geertje Gysbrechts. Her sister, called "Evah Oke" in this document, is the co-plaintiff. Eva was married to Jan Aukes (sometimes Van Nuys), the son of Auke Jansen Van Nuys and Magdalena Pieters. Geertje married Auke Jansen as her second husband. The specifics of the case are not given but the record does state that the two plaintiffs are heir to "John Jacobse late of Bedford" and that it is an action "de morte ancestors". They are suing Lamber Sychels, about whom I have failed to learn anything. However the case has been allowed to abate and judgment does to Lambert. The source for this document is part of the Translations/Transliterations series for the Town Records of Long Island. Labeled as "Court and Road Records. 1668-1766" vol. 2, it is itemized on the Archives Master Sheets (their finding aid) with the only remaining volume of Brooklyn Records (Town Meetings 1785-1823) and is on the same reel of film as those records. For that reason, I have included it in the Brooklyn folder on my web-site. Also this particular volume is lacking the usual certificate at the end which gives the transcriber/translators statement. The statement by the County Clerk is included, dated Feb 1906. The writing appears to be that of Frank L. Van Cleef. Hope some at least of you will enjoy this and find it useful. Renee L. Dauven

    3. Dear List, I added a witness to a baptism tag and when I attempted to select a different witness name from the drop-down box, I got this error message: 107 FRMADDWITNESS.MSAVE. On one occasion my computer locked-up and I had to power down and reboot. I repeated the problem on three occasions and was able to select abort and back out. When I go to the witness person, select the witnessed tag and make the name change, there is no problem. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated, and Merry Christmas! Larry Voreis

    3. Thanks, Jim! Another great resource for the Delaware River Valley section of the Old Mine Road is the Nomination form from the National Park Service for the Old Mine Road Historic District in NJ reflecting research through 1980. http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/80000410.pdf A close reading of the passage from Mathews' "History of Wayne, Pike and Monroe Counties, PA" pub. 1886 defines the area of the Minisink in that text as: "This region from the vicinity of Port Jervis [NY] down to a point *about opposite* the site of Milford was, as heretofore explained, constituted the Minisink precinct." This opposite side of the river from Milford PA is Montague NJ and the passage refers to the double taxation of residents in the Northwest NJ (at present Sussex Co NJ), during the period of the Jersey / New York Line Wars 1701 - 1765. (scroll down) http://www.state.nj.us/dep/njgs/enviroed/newsletter/v5n2.pdf The residents of the Province of Pennsylvania were never taxed by Orange Co, but early PA land records do refer to tracts in the Minisinks / Mennisinks / Menissing as located in Bucks Co on the PA side of the river (later termed Upper Smithfield, in then Northampton Co PA, now Pike & Monroe counties.) I suppose between the Delaware flooding in the last 50 years and the Army Corps of Engineers there's very little hope of that. 3. Hello List, I can't tell you how wonderful it is to see a corps of dedicated genealogy/history buffs working to assist me with my search!  What a nice Christmas gift! In light of this unexpected treat I thought I would present some background information that may or may not be of some use.  Note that this is the direct line of my former husband and daughter. Family history is documented back to David Conner, born about 1750, presumably in Chester County, PA, with a father named Edward.  The family oral history maintains that this Conner family came from Ireland about 1700, and that David and his wife fled from the frontier during the 1778 Wyoming Massacre to Harrisburg,PA where David died in 1792 (death documented) .  David married Abigail Rhodes, daughter of Barnabas and niece of the former Philadelphia mayor, Samuel Rhoads, in 1772.  Now, Abigail was from northern Montgomery/lower Berks County, PA, and so it is conceivable that David was from the part of Chester that borders this area.  Abigail was born in 1748, and Irish naming patterns of their children seem to prevail. In looking for David's father, Edward, I found a marriage record for Edward Conner and Ann Gallaugher in February, 1747 at Abingdon Presbyterian.  The location of the church in Montgomery County, the denomination and the date make this, while circumstantial, a most promising lead. So where did they go? There is a sprinkling of Conners about the Chester County area before mentioned, but nothing seemed to fit.  Equally frustrating was trying to find Edward or David in the PA frontier, a very large place.  There is a big gap of no documentation between 1747 to 1783, the latter showing Edward Conner, Jr's birth in York County, PA.  Just a family bible of a son of David Conner.  No places given. Bummer.  So I thought I'd take a break and study the very interesting story of my distant cousin, George Custer (Custard), who was killed by Indians in 1755 near Lehighton in Carbon County (then Northampton), PA and, amazingly, married to Abigail's aunt, Mary Rhoads, whose history is even more fascinating.  While doing so I would also do a Conner search, just in case Abigail decided to pay her aunt a visit. That is how I discovered a 1758 letter written by inhabitants of Lower Smithfield Township (Stroudsburg area, or lower Minisink) to Governor Denny requesting protection from the Indians (PA Archives, iii, pg 357).  Edward Conner is on the list of signers.  And that is how I came to De Staet van Hillitge Conner in 1739 in the Minisink region. Happy Holidays, Kathy

    3. Marguerite,   I've canoed past that spot a few times.  A Paddler's Guide to the Delaware River by Gary Letcher locates Mellener's Cove at milepoint 227.5, about 3/4 of a mile above where the Bushkill Creek enters the river.  This matches with census listings for William Place (born c.1804) in Lehman Twp., Pike County, PA.   If you find Rosenkrans Lane, Walpack, NJ on Google Maps and look at the satellite view, you'll see a road that winds down to the river on the Jersey side.  This was the site of Rosenkrans Ferry.  Melleners Cove is across the river about 500 feet south according to the book.  There doesn't appear to be anything there now except a farm field.
