    3. John: Well said and I could not agree more strongly. I first got acquainted with Harry Macy through the course of suggesting some potential corrections and additions to an article in The Record. Eventually, he encouraged me to tackle the challenge of writing an article of my own. I have come to think of him as a mentor as well and I am fortunate to have had the pleasure of meeting in him in person during a NYG&BS event in Buffalo. Listers: It was disappointing when Harry Macy and Dorothy Koenig retired (and New Netherland Connections with her). However, thanks in part to Harry, I have also had the great pleasure of working with the current Editors of The Record. For those of you contributed to New Netherland Connections in the past or even thought about doing so, I strongly encourage you to consider submitting an article to The Record. Harry Macy, who still works tirelessly on behalf of the *New York Genealogical and Biographical Record*, served as Associate Editor from 1987 to 1988 and as Editor from 1989 to 2006, and following his retirement continued on as a member of the publication committee for more than a year to ease in the transition of the editorship to his successor. During Harry's twenty-year incumbency, I had the privilege of contributing several articles to the journal; and it would be impossible to convey the level of care with which he shepherded them from their crude beginnings into published form. Harry is able to share his vast knowledge so unobtrusively that even the most callow researcher feels bolstered by it. Although I have not yet had the opportunity of meeting Harry in person, I have been acquainted with him through correspondence for over 18 years, and hope he will not be embarassed by my claiming him as a long-distance mentor. Best wishes, John Blythe Dobson

    2. Harry is a wonderful man as I know so well. He has been my mentor also for many years and I am so grateful for his kindness and generosity. He is also a great teacher and if you are a willing student, he has been more than happy to take the time to help you meet your goals. After Barbara Barth's death, without him the Dorland Enigma Solved would never ever have been written and published nor would many of my articles in the New Netherland Connections. We form these relationships via email which is amazing in its self. I have not met Harry in person either, however, he has always extended the hand of friendship and caring when I have needed it. We all value your thoroughness which you used to develop New Netherlands Connections, as well as answering the many questions on this list. 3. Dorothy Koenig's invaluable contributions to Low Dutch genealogy and New Netherland scholarship will live on far past the lives of all of us and will be treasured by many future generations who will carry forward the quest for knowledge. A big, hearty "dank U wel," Dorothy! Back in the 1940s, when I first began writing, about "The Influence of Dutch Settlement on American Civilization," there was precious little reference material to be had, at least in my area. Today, it is gratifying to know that, thanks to the efforts of Dorothy Koenig and others, there is a wealth of material available, and even more to be mined as projects to translate Dutch colonial documents are carried forward. We can all be proud of the now prominent place of New Netherland and its settlers in American history, and the ever expanding contributions to Low Dutch scholarship. 3. I second Judy's advice. When I first moved to a village along the Hudson River, a woman brought me shoe box. It was filled with a lifetime of note cards, on the genealogies on local residents. Her children and tossed them in the garage! I xeroxed every card, then donated the originals to the local historical society. But please look into where you donate. I loved the NYBGS, such a wonderful old building and a lovely quiet library, now gone due to lack of funding. To my knowledge they donated all their material to the NY Public Library. Be certain were you donate is well funded, and will last for future generations, to utilize your research. I am admittedly prejudice to the NEHGS, as I serve on their Council, the NEHGS is keeping their traditions, while moving into the modern world. They are actively building their endowment fund, and just purchased the building next to them - so now will be 97 to 110 Newberry Street. They are opening their collections and expanding, while becoming more and more inclusive. Wherever you donate - make sure they have some sort of endowment! I served on a local board of a historical society I shall not name, and every year it was a struggle just to get the fees to pay the staff, while some money was spent on expending physical artifacts, or an new exhibit, nothing was a allocated to increasing the genealogy collection. Donate!! But research where you donate. We've all worked hard to gather information, as I suspect like myself, could always use more bookshelves. My hope is a 4 generations from now, it will be that missing link that pulls down someone's brick wall. 2. I would also like to encourage others, who like myself find that their children are not really interested in genealogy, to donate their papers, especially copies of original documents to a Genealogical or Historical Society Library of their choice. I finally ended up actually donating documents to several libraries depending on the family because I had visions of my family throwing up their hands and deciding to just toss it all out. They had no idea what or where these papers should go, so I simply made it easy for them. It can be a big job, especially if like many of us who began back in the 1950's and 60's when no one cited anything or copied the title page or even received the citation for a courthouse. You need to make sure that you send some kind of letter noting the documents sent and citing in full reference what they are, it is a big job for libraries to receive a box of documents which have no citations and expect them to do the research involved to properly cite them. Also don't send your personal correspondence. Someone will appreciate those papers in the future. 3. I couldn't agree more. *New Netherland Connections* provided valuable opportunities for authors, and promoted awareness of genealogical sources and techniques for the Dutch colonies of America. Dorothy is to be congratulated on the remarkable achievement of having single-handedly edited and produced its 15 volumes. Anyone with access to *American Ancestors* (published by NEHGS) should consult the article by Henry B. Hoff in vol. 13, no.1 (Winter 2012), pp. 52-54, entitled "*New Netherland Connections* and Researching New York Dutch Families," which highlights some of the major contributions of *NNC*, including Dorothy's own masterful 1996 article on the origins of Catalina Trico and her nephew, Arnoldus de la Grange. 3. Hi Liz, Re. E B O'Callaghan, The Documentary history of the state of New-York -- It was published in two different size sets of books (quarto and octavo?). Thanks to Ruth Piwonka (I think) who mentioned this on the D-C list several years ago. Both are in 4 vols.; so the smaller size books have more pages. Hence, the page number that you might see cited can be different, depending on which size books were being used. I have a CD of them that came from the smaller size books. Pam’s page 137 is correct for them. If someone were citing the bigger books, they would probably have a somewhat lower page number.
