This is because in the not-too-distant future there will be a very powerful search engine at RootsWeb which will allow the searching of both header and body text for surnames, etc. If you post 100 times a year with your SMITH surname listed in the tagline on RootsWeb mailing lists, then that's 100 bogus hits that someone searching for real SMITH information will have to wade through. Multiply that by the number of people who might put SMITH on their tagline and you can understand that the whole search process would become an excercize in futility.
