    1. [DURMAN] Mailing List Changes (PLEASE READ -- PLEASE READ)
    2. George W. Durman
    3. Folks, Rootsweb is once again making changes. This time they're changing over to a new mail server program and some problems have been observed but they have either been fixed or are in the process of being fixed. This time, one of the problems has to do with the List addresses. As some of you may have noticed, there is no longer a "-L" or "-D" in the address. It's just plain GERMANNA_COLONIES@rootsweb.com, although the old GERMANNA_COLONIES-L@rootsweb.com is supposed to continue working for some time. To be on the safe side, just use the address without the "-L", that is, GERMANNA_COLONIES@rootsweb.com. I guess I should pass along some stuff that has come up during the changeover. 1) You can NOT subscribe to both the Normal and Digest Modes with the SAME email address! If you only subscribed to one Mode in the past, you should still be subscribed to that Mode. If you were subscribed to both, with ONE email address, you have probably found out by now that you are receiving email to that address in only one Mode. If you wish to subscribe to the other mode now, you must use a different address. For those who have only one address, a good solution is to get a free Hotmail account (or a free account from some other service) and subscribe with that address. Sorry, but that's the way the new Mailman works. 2) To subscribe to a Rootsweb List that has been "migrated" to the new Mailman service, here's how: To subscribe to the Normal Mode (old -L Mode), send to: GERMANNA_COLONIES-request@rootsweb.com Put SUBSCRIBE in BOTH the subject line AND body To subscribe to the Digest Mode (old -D Mode), send to: GERMANNA_COLONIES-L-request@rootsweb.com Put SUBSCRIBE in BOTH the subject line AND body To unsubscribe do the same as above, except use UNSUBSCRIBE. For other Lists, just replace GERMANNA_COLONIES with the actual name of the List. 3) If you were using the Digest Mode before and were receiving the Digests in MIME instead of Plain Text, you have probably found that you're now receiving them in Plain Text. To revert to the MIME Mode, email the List Administrator and request to be changed to MIME. You can contact any List Administrator by emailing to: ListName-Admin@rootsweb.com Where ListName is the actual name of the List. 4) If anyone has questions about this changeover, don't hesitate to post a query. You can do so here, since there may be others who need to know the same thing. Regards, George List Administrator

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: DURMAN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mBU.2ACEB/28.1 Message Board Post: Dennis, thanks for posting the message about David A. DURMAN. I manage the DURMAN Message Board and DURMAN Mailing List here at Rootsweb and am always looking for "lost cousins". I don't have this David or John in my database, but am almost certain he is from a branch that left TN, went to KY, then to IN and IL. Some members of this branch migrated to MO, and then some members of that group migrated to ID, OR, and CA. Would appreciate a copy of the photo and newspaper article if you can attach to an email to me. Thanks, George W. Durman Knoxville, TN

    1. David A. Durman - Kentucky to Idaho
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/mBU.2ACEB/28 Message Board Post: I take headstone photos here in Canyon County, Idaho, and often get curious about some of those mentioned on headstones. I have a David A. Durman, 1856-1930, who, according to the census was born in Kentucky, possibly to a John Durman. In 1860 David and family were already in Iowa. Anyway, I have a headstone photo for him, and a newspaper article stating that he died in California, but was buried here in the Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell, Canyon County, Idaho. Anyone interested simply contact me. There is no cost. Am just curious if I can help someone with their research.

    1. Fake Email from RootsWeb Abuse Department
    2. George W. Durman
    3. The following is from the Rootsweb HelpDesk at <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/>: ************************************** 2006-05-02 Fake mail addressed from RootsWeb Abuse Department: It has come to our attention that RootsWeb is suffering from a low-life attempt to infect its users by sending them to an infected website. Basically, if you see mail that is reputedly being stated as being from the RootsWeb Abuse Department and telling you to confirm your email by clicking a link, then just delete it. Please DO NOT click the link. Thanks. ************************************** The following information is also given on the same web page: ************************************** Infected E-mails and Spam: Many worms, trojans, or viruses forge (copy) the "From" e-mail address, making them appear to come from someone you know (such as RootsWeb.com). Or, they may have a file name that would make it look like a legitimate e-mail address. Spam, or an infected e-mail might indicate a message came from RootsWeb.com, or from a mailing list at RootsWeb.com, when it didn't. An infected computer is sending these forged messages to you privately. RootsWeb.com cannot prevent these forgeries, nor the bounces for failed deliveries. To learn more, and for links to online sites that can verify your computer is clean of these viruses, click here (<http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/virus.html>). ************************************** In short, I think that any email asking you to click a link to go to a website to confirm ANYTHING, whether it be your email address, User Name/ID, Password, etc., should be ignored. Such tactics are called "Phishing", i.e., someone is "fishing" for your personal information. DON'T DO IT!!!!! No legitimate website will ever send you an email asking you to click a link and then enter personal information. Regards, Mailing List Administrator

    1. Re: DURMAN-D Digest V06 #1
    2. I have recieved your email. My interest is still John Durman born about 1862 or there about, of Sussex or possibly Hampshire, England All I can say is that there are not enough records for the area I need to help me prove who John's parents were. I have looked at every record that is available. I have a theory but I can't prove it because the record awer not complete, Most of the Durmans (with this spelling) came from the south of England. They spead from Sussex to Cornwall and all counties in between. Being from an area near the casot they could easily have travelled to all parts of the world. I have list of every one of them, frm about 1560 or so (when records were started in the churches) up until about 1900. First names for the men of John, William, Simon, and Robert were about the most popular, with a few Richards and Henrys here and there. Pam Freestone

    1. Re: Durman info (Polish-USA)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Durman, Durrman, Durmann, Durhman, Derman Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mBU.2ACEB/22.2 Message Board Post: Hello Angela, Good luck on finding more about your DURMAN ancestry. I've been doing research on our DURMAN line for almost 30 years! I've never run across the names Chester or Joseph. Now, a question. What kind of documentation do you have for Joseph immigrated from Poland? Mind you, I'm not questioning your information, just curious as to how you know he came from Poland. We have our DURMAN line documented back to about 1750 in Montgomery Co., VA. They were to be found in that county and in Wythe, Smythe, Culpeper, and other counties nearby. We are at a dead end beyond one William DURMAN who married in Montgomery Co., in 1750. As to your ancestor being Polish, that is entirely possible. We have found, and corresponded with, Durman individuals in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Hungary, Serbia, and Turkey. We have also found the name in France, Germany, England (many, many in the UK), and The Sudan. The name is always spelled exactly as DURMAN (of course there are variant spellings in all those countries, such DURRMAN, DURMANN, DURHMAN, DERMAN, etc.); but, the most people found have the name DURMAN. I corresponded with a DURMAN in Serbia and he has no clue as to where his ancestors came from. He says the "family lore" is that they came into Serbia from somewhere in the northeast, which could be any of the Slavic countries. I found some DURMAN's in California and Oregon who "know" where their ancestors came from! Seems a man escaped from one of the previous Soviet-bloc countries (don't remember which one now, but I "think" it was Poland), whose name was not DURMAN. As part of his escape, he took an aunt's name, DURMAN. He arrived in the USA with that name, and his descendants still carry it. But, at least he had a DURMAN relative in whatever country he escaped from. You didn't give any dates in your post, and they would help immensely in figuring out it your DURMAN branch connects with ours, since we think our branch arrived at PA also. As to the name being shortened from some other name, I don't believe that was the case. It seems that DURMAN's in this country have always been DURMAN's. 1. Listing SURNAMES In the "Surnames" Box When Posting Messages
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mBU.2ACEB/27 Message Board Post: Some Board users are confused about which surnames to list when posting here to the Boards. The proper procedure is to list ONLY those surnames that appear in the body of your post. In other words, you do NOT list all the surnames you are researching. And, it is important to list ALL surnames that appear in the message body. The box for Surnames is searched whenever anyone does a global search at either Ancestry or Rootsweb, and users will see those Board posts that deal with the surnames listed there. If you include all the surnames you are researching in the Subject box, and, if you list "Clore" and the post doesn't concern that surname, anyone searching for it will get "hits" for any posts you have made where you listed that name in the box, EVEN THOUGH YOU DID NOT MENTION "CLORE" IN THE BODY OF YOUR POST. I know it's not clear what you should type in there, but just remember, it's ONLY for those surnames that you mention in the body of the post. Regards, George W. Durman Board Administrator

    3. Just a note to remind everyone about the differences between MAILING LIST posts here on these Lists and MESSAGE BOARD posts on the Ancestry and Rootsweb websites. Message Board posts are not the same as these Mailing List posts. The Board posts go directly to the Ancestry/Rootsweb websites; they are only copied to these Lists. That is, they are "gatewayed" from Boards to Lists. The problem is that many users are replying to such "gatewayed" posts directly here to the Lists. That won't work for this reason: Most posters to the Boards are not subscribers to the corresponding Lists; therefore, they usually do not see your replies, since the List replies are not reciprocally "gatewayed" back to the Boards. If you see posts here on these Lists that look like the following, please click on the provided URL link and post your reply there. You do not need to post here on the Lists, since your Board replies will be copied to these Lists. The parts of a Board post to look for here on the Lists is exampled between the ===== lines. ================================================== This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
