    1. [DURMAN] A Helpful RootsWeb Review Article for List/Board Users (PLEASE READ !!!!!)
    2. List Manager
    3. The following is a post to Managers/Administrators of Mailing Lists and Message Boards at Rootsweb/Ancestry, and to USERS of Lists and Boards. PLEASE READ !!!!! It contains some useful/important information for subscribers to Mailing Lists and/or users of Message Boards. SgtGeorge George W. Durman Manager/Administrator =============================================== PORTALS TO SUCCESS. Message Board/Mailing List Gateways. Anyone may search, post, or reply to messages on the free RootsWeb/Ancestry Message Boards. In addition to these Message Boards, RootsWeb also hosts thousands of free mailing lists for genealogy-related topics. Researchers must subscribe to a Mailing List in order to participate in the discussion. The requirement to subscribe to a Mailing Lists helps to eliminate spam because it limits the ability to post messages to those who have joined the list. For the most part, researchers who join (subscribe to) a Mailing List and read and post messages on the list are actively interested in the topic, locality, or surname that is the subject of the Mailing List. Both Message Boards and Mailing Lists have a place in your genealogical research. They are two excellent means by which researchers with a similar interest can make contact with one another. Mailing Lists are great for real-time in-depth group discussion of a subject, while Message Boards can be an appropriate venue for peripheral research into allied and collateral lines, and subjects of passing, or minor, interest. Since Message Boards are universally searchable they also make an excellent place for you to post a query about your brick-wall ancestors, or to archive data, documents, and photos. While Mailing Lists often appeal to those with a serious interest in a particular subject, Message Boards are valuable to serious researchers and rainy-day dabblers alike. A handy feature of many RootsWeb Message Boards and Mailing Lists is the availability of a one-way gateway, which allows the automatic copying of Message Board posts to be made directly to a corresponding Mailing List. This feature allows those who have not joined the mailing list to have their Message Board posts viewed and replied to by Mailing List members in addition to others who search the Message Boards. The Message Board gateway is an option that is used by many of the thousands of volunteer Mailing List and Message Board administrators. To spot a Message Board that is gatewayed to a Mailing List, look for a yellow envelope icon superimposed over the sheets of paper icon, which represents a Message Board. There also will be a yellow highlighted blurb explaining that posts made to the Message Board also appear on the corresponding Mailing List. IMPORTANT. If you are a Mailing List subscriber, and you see a message posted on the list that says, "This is a Message Board post that is gatewayed to this Mailing List" if you wish to respond to that message do NOT reply by clicking the "REPLY TO" option and sending your response to the Mailing List. Instead, click on the URL (address) link included in the message body, and reply directly to the post on the Message Board. Your reply will then be gatewayed to the Mailing List. Replying on the Message Board ensures that the original poster, and anyone else who may benefit from your information, will see your response. If your favorite Mailing Lists are not gatewayed to a corresponding Message Board, and you believe gatewaying would be beneficial, contact the list administrator to suggest the gateway be opened by writing to LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com. Replace the word LISTNAME with the actual Mailing List's name. If you wish to contact the SMITH Mailing List administrator, for instance, write to: SMITH-admin@rootsweb.com To learn more about Message Boards, see also: "Message Board Queries (RootsWeb Review 5:30, 24 July 2002); "Message Board Solutions," (RWR 5:29, 17 July 2002) "Meandering Through the Message Boards" (RWR 5:28, 10 July 2002); "Discovering Display Options on the Message Boards" (RWR 5:27, 3 July 2002); "Getting the Most Out of Message Boards" (RWR 5:26, 26 June 2002); and "Message Board Attachments" (RWR 5:23, 5 June 2002); and "Message Board Icons" (RWR 5:22, 29 May 2002) -- all previous issues of RWR are searchable and downloadable here: http://e-zine.rootsweb.com/ Previously published in RootsWeb Review: Vol. 5, No. 31, 31 July 2002.

    1. [DURMAN] Problems at Ancestry/Rootsweb Web Sites
    2. List Manager
    3. For the past few days, MyFamily/Ancestry/Rootsweb has been undergoing some hardware and software upgrades and modifications. This has caused some web pages to not work properly, or to not work at all. We are assured that these problems will be solved soon. In the meantime, if you experience difficulties reaching any of our web sites, particularly the Message Boards pages, it is caused by the servers at MyFamily/Ancestry/Rootsweb, and has nothing to do with your own systems or connections. One of the problems you may experience when you go to John Blankenbaker's "Germany and Austria Photo Page" is that you may not see an index at the bottom showing all the available individual village/town pages of photos. You may also notice small problems with web page elements that work with CGI, such as not seeing "This Page was Last Modified (Date & Time)", and maybe a few more such errors. And, it is impossible to upload any new web pages, or upload any changes to existing pages. Therefore, John's latest "Germanna Notes" haven't been posted, nor have the latest pages for his and Eleanor's photos from the May, 2002 trip to Germany and Austria. As soon as the server problems are corrected, I will immediately upload all pending new pages and modifications. I have ready Notes Nr. 1406 through 1409, and some changes to the Photos pages, specifically for Lambsheim and Neuenbürg. Until then, please be patient. If, after the problems are "solved", you still see glitches on any of the pages, PLEASE let me know about it. Regards, George W. Durman List Manager

    3. Keith - I found an entry in my records which appears to be one you are interested in as follows: William Durman b. 1787 Ashill, Somerset, England Occupation 1861 ag Lab. Residence 1861, 76 Kenny, Ashill married abt 1811 to Mary probably in Ashill. Mary born 1791 in Ashill, Somerset, occupation glover in 1861. Son Edward born 1831 in Ashill. Info comes from 1861 Census of Ashill on LDS film 0542843 This fits in with the family info on Edward which Pam came up with. I have many more Durman records but I am not sure if they fit with yours since mine start with the Jeffery clan and then proceed to Durman records through marriages. Ernie Snelling

    1. [DURMAN] Changing Email Addresses for the Lists
    2. LISTOWNER
    3. To All Subscribers: PLEASE, when your email address changes, and you send email to change the address on these Lists, IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW what the "OLD" address was. These days many users are changing servers, and I really appreciate it when they have enough forethought to let me know so I can change their List subscriptions. When the users keep the same user name, e.g., "somebody@", and change the domain part, e.g., "@whatever.com", and don't tell me the OLD email address, I CAN usually find them, but after having searched through 26 subscriber lists, and 4000+ addresses, by looking for the user name; BUT, if the subscriber has changed the address completely, e.g., from "JD1234@aol.com" to "JohnDoe@msn.com", I have NO way of knowing the original subscriber address. So, again, PLEASE include the OLD address in your emails to others, ESPECIALLY if you're changing the address for a Mailing List or Subscription List. Thanks, George W. Durman Listowner

    1. [DURMAN] The Threaded Archives Have Been Restored !!!!!

    3. Folks, Ancestry/Rootsweb has restored the Archives for our Mailing Lists. I don't know if any of you were aware of it, but there had been no archiving since September. You may now go to the Archive site and see all past posts to these Lists. Here are the URLs for the Lists I manage: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/barrel-racing http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/briles http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/brill http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/broyles http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/cft-win http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/cullop http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/durman http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/germanna_colonies http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/lovette http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/mcquilkin http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/rupp http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/wilhite http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/wilhoit (If you want to search other Archives, and know the name of the List, you can go here and type in the name of the List, or search for it: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/) Just go to the appropriate URL and look down the list of month/year. Click on the one you want and you'll get a screen showing all the posts for that month/year. I suggest that you put check marks in the "Order with Names" and "Order with Dates". That will let you see the poster of the emails and the dates. You can also choose "Chronological" or "Threaded". The first shows all messages in a strict chronological order, the second groups them together when replies have been sent to original emails. Enjoy, SgtGeorge George W. Durman Listowner

    1. [DURMAN] New Virus/Trojan - W32/Goner.A, "Goner Screen Saver"

    3. Just in case any of you haven't heard of the latest infection, the "Goner Screen Saver", please read the following. Of course, most of you already know not to open attachments to emails, BUT..... just in case some of you are "newbies", you should read and heed the warning. (PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS ON THE LIST. IF YOU NEED TO DISCUSS IT, EMAIL ME PRIVATELY. THANKS) Regards, SgtGeorge George W. Durman Listowner = = = = = = = = = = = For those of you who may have been hit by the W32/Goner.A "Screen Saver" worm, at the end of this message are some recommended actions and websites that may be able to assist. SA Jane B. Marazzo FBI Philadelphia 215-418-4411 InfraGard Philadelphia Chapter National: http://www.nipc.gov/ ALERT 01-029.1 "VBS/Mass-Mailing Worm, W32/Goner.A" December 05, 2001 [Updates to NIPC Alert 01-029 are included] The National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) continues to monitor a mass-mailing worm called W32/Goner.A. This is a very fast-spreading mass-mailing worm that appears to take advantage of Visual Basic Scripting built into Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express (Windows-based), then propagates using e-mail and an online instant messenger (ICQ.) Developing information continues to indicate that this worm mails itself to all addresses within the infected computer's Outlook or Outlook Express address book, sets itself as a server process so it does not show up in the task manager, and deletes the anti-virus definitions from many common anti-virus products. It also searches out and terminates many commercial anti-virus software and firewall product processes. The E-Mail sent, to date, is always the same: Subject: Hi Attachment: gone.scr Message text: "How are you? When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you I am in a harry[sic], I promise you will love it! " Goner spreads itself via ICQ's online instant messaging program client using the library file ICQMAPI.DLL. Goner copies that DLL from the directory C:\PROGRAM FILES\ICQ\ to the Windows system directory. Goner then sends itself to all on-line users (regardless of mode) from an internal list of online users, via ICQ file transfer. Goner also answers to requests from other users requesting file transfers. In order to hide its presence and actions, Goner does several things within the system. First, Goner sets itself up as a server process so it does not show up in the task manager as a running program. It then writes itself to the Windows registry so the worm is restarted upon reboot. Goner then searches out and terminates processes from many commercial anti-virus software packages and many commercial firewall products, including those for personal use. This renders the anti-virus software and firewall software temporarily useless, however infected users may still believe they are protected. Recommended Actions: Update virus definitions and scan for presence of the worm. Ensure virus definitions include the signature for Goner or request definition updates from your technical support personnel. Most major anti-virus companies have provided new definition files for this virus. If your definition file pre-dates 4 December 2001, it is not current. Older definitions do not alert on this worm. For individual users: Consider deleting unexpected e-mails that contain file attachments without opening them. Exercise particular caution with respect to e-mails that contain attachments that end in .exe, .vbs, .bat, .scr, and .pif. Consider turning off all script and scripting within the e-mail client security settings. Consider upgrading your e-mail client. Outlook 2002 has many security features enabled by default that would block propagation of Goner and certain other mass mailing e-mail worms. These actions may help protect you against this worm and many other mass-mailingmalware products in the wild today. For Corporate users and system administrators: Consider blocking ICQ traffic during an infection to block further propagation. ICQ client-to-server communication is conducted over TCP port 5190. Consider blocking all messages that have attachments with extensions mentioned above. NIPC recommends having a virus checker at the mail server point that scans all incoming and outgoing messages for malicious code, as well as blocking executable file extensions. The anti-virus software industry is aware of Goner and is providing signature files to download to detect and remove it from infected hosts. Full descriptions and removal instructions are located at the following anti-virus Web sites: F-Secure Corp. http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/goner.shtml Network Associates Inc./McAfee.com <http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99272&> Symantec Corp. <http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.goner.a@mm.html> Trend Micro Inc. <http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_GONE.A> As always, the NIPC encourages computer users to keep anti-virus and systems software current by frequently checking vendor web sites for updates, and routinely checking for alerts issued by the NIPC, FedCIRC, CERT/CC, and similar organizations. The NIPC encourages recipients of this alert to report computer intrusions to their local FBI office http://www.fbi.gov/contact/fo/fo.htm or the NIPC, and to other appropriate authorities. Recipients may report incidents online at http://www.nipc.gov/incident/cirr.htm, and can reach the NIPC Watch and Warning Unit at (202) 323-3205, 1-888-585-9078 or nipc.watch@fbi.gov.

    1. [DURMAN] Very IMPORTANT Follow-Up to Previous Virus Warning
    2. LISTOWNER
    3. This is a follow-up to yesterday's email about this new dastardly virus. (I'm also sending BCC: copies to several Lists which I do not manage.) It is called "W32/BadTrans.b@MM". It is quite different from the original "W32/BadTrans@MM" virus. First, here's how it works. When a user becomes infected, the next time he/she reboots the computer, the virus goes through the user's email program and looks for unread emails in all the mailboxes. It picks some of these, makes a reply to them, and sends itself. Here's the kicker. It uses the infected persons email address as the sender, BUT it adds "_" (underscore) before the real address. The subject line will probably have nothing but "RE:" (nothing else). (In a few of the emails I have received, there WERE subject lines, so you really can't count on seeing only RE:.) The body of the email will be completely blank. There are no attachments, so there is nothing to click. The virus is embedded in the body, with cute code to hide it; the recipient never sees anything but a totally blank message. (I'm adding this after I finished the email. I just discovered a problem when searching for FROM: addresses that start with <_. There is a problem with people who have their email program set to show both their name and email address in the FROM: header. If such a person is infected, mail from him/her will show, in the header, something like the following: "John Doe" <_johndoe@wherever.com> The FROM: element in the header you see before you open the email will show only "John Doe". That's a problem. Either set up a filter to divert infected emails to a separate mailbox, or make sure your system is COMPLETELY protected before you open or preview any more emails.) In addition, the virus tries to dig through the infected person's computer and send email addresses, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, passwords, etc., back to the writer of the virus. Anyone using OUTLOOK (not Outlook Express) will infect his/her computer if he/she merely OPENS (reads) or PREVIEWS the email. The email has no attachment to click to activate it; it is activated by opening it, by the hidden HTML code in the email. Again, the virus makes use of the ms01-027 exploit, which means that the virus can execute on READING or PREVIEWING the email from within OutLook - it is not necessary to double click on any attachment, since the email contains no TEXT or ATTACHMENT. The virus is EMBEDDED in the body, but formatted NOT to appear, thus you get a completely blank message if you WERE to open it, which would mean you are already infected when you open the email, IF you haven't done all the following: 1) Installed an Anti-Virus (AV) program; 2) Kept it updated with the latest data files; 3) Have your AV program configured properly to detect email viruses; 4) Downloaded and installed the MS patches for MSIE 5.01 and 5.5. The patch to fix this exploit has been available from Microsoft since May 16, 2001 !!!!!!!!!! Where to read the Microsoft Bulletin MS01-027, dated May 16, 2001, and links for downloading the patch for MSIE 5.01 and 5.5: <http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-027.asp> Where to read about the W32/BadTrans.b@MM Virus: <http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/viruses/badtrans/default.asp?cid=2607> <http://www.messagelabs.com/viruseye/report.asp?id=86> Evidently, MSIE 6.0 is not affected, since all the patches for 5.01 and 5.5 were incorporated into it. But, to be sure, make sure you go to the Windows Update page and check to see which patches your system needs. <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/> I have seen emails on some of the Lists to which I subscribe, where obstinate users absolutely refuse to install an Anti-Virus (AV) program. They claim they are intelligent and experienced enough to never become infected. NOT SO !!!!! This latest atrocity is being spread by some of these "superior" users. What users without AV programs don't under- stand is that they are doing all the rest of us hundreds of million users a great disservice. I'm tired of downloading dozens of messages every day containing this virus (and others). Someone else will have to provide the information for Norton and other AV programs, but here is what I know about McAfee: You must have version 4.x or later installed; You must be using the 4.0.70 or later engine; You must be using the 4172 or later data file; You must correctly configure McAfee to catch viruses in emails and downloaded files. Furthermore, IF you are using Outlook (not Outlook Express): You MUST not open suspicious emails, or preview them; You must look at the From: header; if it has an address similar to this, <_someone@somewhere.com>, DON'T open it; all the addresses of the infected persons will be real, except they will have the _ (underscore) in from of them. If you open or preview an infected message in Outlook, it's too late! You're already infected! One further thing. If you DO use an AV program, it is imperative that you check for updates often -- at least daily, and, with these souped-up virus versions starting to come out, 2-3 times a day wouldn't hurt. I was lucky. I used the McAfee utility to check for updates and downloaded the latest data file just hours before I started receiving the first bunch of infected emails. Many were not so lucky. Addition for Eudora users: Set up a filter that looks for <_ in any header; set it to transfer all such emails to a special folder (such as Infected-Email); make sure you also select "Skip Rest" in the second Action box; then move this filter to the very top of your filters. 1. [DURMAN] Snow White Virus & W32/BadTrans@MM Virus
    2. LISTOWNER
    3. Will everyone on these Lists please check your computer for viruses. Someone has started another round of the Snow White Virus and it is impossible to tell from whom it was sent, other than the emails I received came from someone using "@worldnet.att.net". PLEASE, I ask everyone again -- if you don't have an Anti-Virus program, GET ONE; if you have one by have not kept it up to date with the latest data files, UPDATE NOW; and if you have one and it's up to date, CONFIGURE IT PROPERLY to catch email and attachments that contain infections. Also, there is a new deadly strain of the W32/BadTrans@MM virus making its rounds. It was rewritten by some miscreant and doesn't even show up in your email as an attachment! It arrives in email that has nothing in the body; since this virus uses email from you sitting on someone's computer, it will show a subject of something you have sent previously -- DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO OPENING IT! With the W32/BadTrans@MM virus, the From: address shows the true address of the infected person, but a "_" (underscore) is placed in front of the name. So, look from email from addresses with this underscore as the first character. Don't OPEN such emails; delete them immediately! I normally don't like to see virus warnings on these Lists, but these new attacks are so dangerous I feel everyone needs to be advised. Regards, SgtGeorge George W. Durman Listowner

    3. Folks, just a short note to tell you about the new variation of the "W32/BadTrans@MM" virus. If you receive an email with or without a subject line (it may contain only RE:), and absolutely nothing in the body, DO NOT open it! If you have an Anti-Virus program, keep it updated, and have it configured correctly, it will catch the attached virus at download. No matter what the subject line, if the body is blank, delete the email immediately. George W. Durman Listowner

    1. [DURMAN] Rootsweb Was Down - Lost Messages

    3. For approximately 12 hours, from about 5:30 AM to about 5:30 PM EST, Sunday, 11/18/01, mail sent to the Lists at Rootsweb was lost. If you sent email and never saw it on the Lists, please re-send, IF you were fortunate enough to keep copies. I've learned from this. I usually delete all sent email, except for critical posts, soon after sending. I now plan to keep ALL sent email for a week before deleting it. The problem was caused by a failed server at Rootsweb. Normally, such a failure would have caused email posts to be re-routed to another server and sent as usual. This was an exceptional problem, and one that, as far as I know, has never happened before. But, "if it CAN happen, sooner or later, it WILL happen". SgtGeorge George W. Durman

    3. Carol, the posts have NOT been about "politics"; they have been about sympathy, heart-break, and patriotism. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but you know where the "Delete" button is on your keyboard. I can't believe that you would be upset over one post on this List about the tragedy. There have been dozens of such posts on other Lists, and I have not seen even one email of protest on those Lists. Regards, SgtGeorge George W.
