She was born in Troy, N.Y., on Sept. 7, 1945. Mrs. Durkin was a graduate of Schuylerville High School and was a 1967 graduate of Plattsburgh State College with a bachelors and masters in elementary education. She taught for three years at Camden Elementary and moved to the Saranac Lake area in 1970. She taught at the Lake Clear School from 1971 until 1974 and at Bloomingdale School from 1974 until July 1, 2001, when she retired. Mrs. Durkin enjoyed reading and writing, puzzles and crossword puzzles. She was a communicant of St. John's Church, Lake Clear. She was a devoted teacher and loved her home, her family and her pets. She is survived by her husband, Philip Durkin, whom she married Dec. 18, 1965; her mother, Eva Cromie of Schuylerville, N.Y.; two daughters, Laura Highsmith and her husband Selby of Jewett City, Conn., and Melissa Durkin and husband Darren Markus of San Jose, Calif.; a son, Michael Durkin of Pottstown, Pa.; six grandchildren, Johnathan, Kristen and Darian Durkin and Brandon, Jordan and Cameron LaMay; two sisters, Lois Minor of Schuylerville and Dawn Anderson of South Glens Falls; a brother, William Cromie of Bechtelsville, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Fortune - Keough Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. A Bible vigil will be held at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. John's Church, Lake Clear, with Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery Lake Clear. Friends wishing to remember Mrs. Durkin may make memorial contributions to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society of Saranac Lake Free Library in care of the funeral home.
