My GGGrandfather was Owen Durkin He enlisted in the US Army at Jefferson Barracks, Newport, Kentucky on December 20, 1854 at the age of 21. His enlistment papers state he was born in County Sligo, Ireland in 1833. Owen was described as having Gray eyes, black hair, fair completion and 5' 71/2" tall. He was murdered by fellow soldiers on Feb.4, 1859. I know absolutely nothing about his family prior to joining the Army. I do not know when he came to America. I wonder if there are any ties to your Durkins. My G-Grandfather James Durkin (b 1831 believed Sligo) and his brother Michael (b 1826/8 definitely Sligo) and also another brother John, emigrated to Australia. They were of the RC religion, can not find too much on them. > Could Thomas (b 1825 be another brother? > It has been a known fact throughout the family for years that there were cousins in America. > Co-incidentally or otherwise, both James' and Michael's eldest sons were named Thomas, they each also had sons named after their( known-to-me) brothers e.g. John & James..Michael's death papers in Melbourne Australia state that his father's name was Owen, but it does seem strange that there are no Owens turning up in later generations of these families. > > > ============================== > Ancestry.com--Your #1 Source for Family History Online--FREE for 14 Days > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=702&sourceid=1238 > >
