My g-grandfather James Durkin's brother, namely John Durkin ex Sligo, lived for some time in Williamstown/Melbourne Australia around the mid-latter half of the 1800's. I believe that a birth reg. I have found of Annie Durkin in Williamstown in 1865 to John Durkin & Sarah Tinker is the one and same John Durkin. Apart from that snippet, and a photo I have of him also in Williamstown Vic I have "lost" him - can find nothing more of him/Sarah/Annie Durkin on any of the Australian States' records, therefore have come to the conclusion that they must have returned to Ireland, or elsewhere, after 1865. Is it possible that you may be able to scan your photo & send to me at shinty@iprimus.com.au - I can also scan the photo I have to you, if you forward your email address. It's a very small straw to cling to, but one never knows! These Durkins certainly are an elusive bunch! 3. Pat, Do you have any further information on Mary Ann FARRELL and Joseph Martin DURKIN? I ask because the name of their first child, Ambrose, interested me. I have a line of FARRELLS in England in the 19th c. who named some of their boys Ambrose - and in the 1881 census there were only 2 Ambrose FARRELLs in the whole of GB. One of them is ours. I wondered, with the name being so rare, whether there was any connection between our families? Based on the age of their children the oldest - Catherine 16 years old born in PA from the 1870 census, Thomas & Bridget probably immigrated early 1850's. 3. My GGGrandfather was Owen Durkin He enlisted in the US Army at Jefferson Barracks, Newport, Kentucky on December 20, 1854 at the age of 21. His enlistment papers state he was born in County Sligo, Ireland in 1833. Owen was described as having Gray eyes, black hair, fair completion and 5' 71/2" tall. He was murdered by fellow soldiers on Feb.4, 1859. I know absolutely nothing about his family prior to joining the Army. I do not know when he came to America. I wonder if there are any ties to your Durkins.
