I'm at work so I do not have any info with me, but I'm afraid that the Henry you speak of is not the same. My grandfather Henry (Harry) died in 1953 , he was born to Michael (1851) sometime in the 1880's, my father John (Jack 1910) was one of 13 original and 5 half Durkins of Henry ( Paterson NJ area wow!). I'm kind of stuck in the 1825 to 1850 area. My great-grandfather Michael had brothers and a sister all born in that 1848-1855 time, of which I have no information. However, I am currently working on the Durkin family trying to make a connection to the parents of Mary Durkin Hayes who was born in Ireland around 1836. Mary lived in Florence NJ but had connections to Philadelphia , Bordentown and Ashland Pa. Your Henry Durkin is found in the Fed Census in Bordentown in 1860 sic: Henry Durkin 37 Daylaborer born Ireland Sarah 37 born Ireland Micahel 10 NJ Henry 8 NJ James 7 NJ William 5 NJ Bridget Van Kale(?)25 (15?) Ireland. There is also a Van Kale(?) family from Ireland listed on the same page. At the time there were also other Durkins listed in Bordentown. There are also some buried in the local Catholic Cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It is about a James Durkin from Brewster, NY. My great grandfather was Philip Durkin from Sligo, Ireland. I believe that Philip's father (if I have the generations straight) was Luke Durkin. Several decades ago an elderly aunt gave me a for me a list of Philip Durkin's children--or maybe it was Luke's children. They included a James, who immigrated to Brewster, New York. The list also included a Luke, A Martin, Anthony, Jack, and Edward. If someone connected with the James from Brewster, NY reads this, I would love to be in touch with you to provide/share information. Thanks. Rosemary Lyon, rdlyon@verizon.net Please note that the name was often spelled Durcan in Ireland. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The name is sometimes spelled Durcan. Philip's son was my grandfather Michael J. Durkin, who came to Salem, Massachusetts. He had several siblings who also came to the United States, including Luke , Bridget, Atty, and Winfred. I have never been able to find a record of Michael's birth or to prove how and when he came to the U.S. Is there anyone else (other than Karen Treacy) who is tracking this family who might have some information? My family starts with Honour McManus-Durkin, her daughter was Bridget who married a Brown, James I believe( County Down), offspring John, Harry, Catherine, Lena, James. Patrick Durkin I believe came to US with Bridget and returned to Ireland late 1870 . I think they had a sister named Clara She wrote to him at Village Culmlimey, County Mayo Bridget and James separated shortly after marriage. I have a feeling they were both on the ship that came to US, as the ships seemed to come out of Liverpool or County Cork. I found some Ships records for her arrival in US, she was with a Catherine a friend, who then lived nearby. Bridget Durkin Brown had about 3 dogs. I think her sisters name was Clara who came her also A cousin of mine who i don't know lives in Florida and has the family tree records, I tried to contact her thru an email but no luck. but if she sees this, the name Rozanski should ring a bell. Author: Roseann_Clavelli Surnames: DURKIN Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.durkin/51.153/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Nora, I am searching for Durkins in Bethlehem, PA - not far from Whitehall (outside Allentown, PA) and in the same time frame as you - and earlier in Brooklyn. My surnames of major interest are McFadden, Curran and Coll - but Durkins fit into my collateral lines. (More on this later.) I also am interested in the "Bird" surname, as one of my family is supposed to have married a Leo? Bird in the same area of Pennsylvania, and I have never been able to unearth a thing about him. Here's my Durkin connections: Lucinda Best married Hugh Durkin, who was killed in a railroad accident in the late 1800s in Bethlehem. She then went on to remarry to my widowed great-great grandfather, Francis Achtermann, in Bethlehem soon afterward in a very social celebration described in great detail in the local newspaper. Lucinda Best Durkin Achtermann became known for her charitable works then, as my great-great grandfather was fairly well-to-do, owning a restaurant/ice-cream shop/inn and properties. At the time of her marriage, Lucinda had a daughter, Ida Durkin. Ida later became a registered nurse who never married and died about 1939. Ida was the sponsor for my dad's baptism so the Durkin side remained close to my McFaddens throughout their lifetime. Lucinda and Ida are buried in our family Achtermann plot in Bethlehem. (From research, it appears Hugh had a brother Thomas married to Bridget, also in Chestnut Hill area of Bethlehem.) There was (another??/the same??) Hugh Durkin in Bethlehem about the same time with a daughter named Annie. She married Lawrence Broughal and they moved to the mid-west where she died within a few years of their marriage. Lawrence had a brother who was a priest in Philadelphia. Descendants of this Broughal line were also best friends with my parents in Bethlehem. Other newspaper accounts show that Hugh Durkin (not sure which one) had an "adopted" daughter. It is not clear to me if that "adopted" daughter was Ida Durkin or Annie Durkin. There was some great "mystery" regarding Ida, and later her death seemed a bit suspicious. She was found in her home after several days, and a "boarder" reported it. I could never find any police follow-up to this. So, while there are no direct links to your line that I can establish at the moment, there are little bits and pieces of interest -- similar locations, names, etc. I'd like to explore this further if you contact me directly at clavelli@aol.com. Thanks in advance. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
