Hi - Is your "place in Durham named SHIRTON" possibly Shildon, by Bishop Auckland ? (There's the National Railway Museum there). HI Slyvia I have looked at the image of John Layburn on the 1851 census ref. HO107 Piece 1472 folio203 page40 and the place of birth of John looks to me as though it could be Sherburn, as in Sherburn Hospital. If you go to the genuki site at www.genuki.org.uk you can make your way to the pages for Co. Durham and then under the heading Towns and Parishes you will find listed under the letter S. Sherburn Hospital and a little information about the place as well as links to further information. If you don't already use this site I would suggest bookmarking it as it is very useful for finding your way around the UK with genealogy in mind. The whole site has been set up for Genealogists and Family History, the name Genuki stands for GENealogical UK Information. Regards Jenny DeAngelis.
