Dear List, I wonder if anyone can help with my peverbial brick wall. CAWTHORN / CAWTHORNE / CAWTON? or any other variants is what I am tracking, my father was a CAWTHORNE from Leeds. But I have tracked the family back to Durham County. I am stuck at the following George CAWTHORN was married to Jane JOHNSON on 21 July 1784 at Lamesley and all their children were born in Chester le Street. Big question is where was George born I have found two George CAWTHORN both christened in Medomsley. (1) Christened 18 Sep 1757 to a John and Barbara - this would make him 27 when married (2) Christened 10 July 1763 to a William and Mary (TAYLOR I believe) - this would make him 21 when married As I live so far away I am reliant on searches on the web for information. I was hoping that someone with access to more local records could help me (1) to decide which one is most likely (2) to find the birth of William and of John if possible (3) to find the marriage of John and Barbara (I have the marriage of William and Mary on 8 Dec 1759 at Ryton) Myself I am leaning toward William and Mary being the father of George as his first child was a boy and christened William the first daughter was Jane after her mother but the second daughter was called Mary. There are no children of George and Jane christened either John or Barbara and I thought that was significant. George is listed as a forgeman on all the birth records in case that helps Just to complete the picture I believe I have found the burials of George and Jane 01 Aug 1823 at Chester le Street - CAWTHORN Jane age 63 - makes her born 1760 17 April 1837 at Chester le Street - CAWTHORNE George age 73 - makes him born 1764 Another reason for believing William and Mary were George's parents Any thoughts would be gratefully received as I have struggled with this for absolutely ages and cannot find William's birth/Christening anywhere.
