Hi Listers, The IGI gives the parents of my recently discovered 4X grandmother , Eleanor ATKINSON christened on 12 March , 1793 in Houghton Le Spring as Joseph ATKINSON and Hannah. I cannot find anything on a Joseph but there are several likely siblings for Hannah (maybe WEDDELL) and a John ATKINSON . Did the IGI make a mistake with the name Joseph? Has anyone access to these parish records that could help me? Cheers, Dorothy on Vancouver Island
Maybe Joseph wasn't from Houghton Le Spring originally so you would need to look elsewhere for his baptism etc., He could be from a parish whose parish records are not included in the IGI or he could be of Houghton Le Spring but the dates covered for that parish by the IGI do not extend to the period when he might have been baptised there. It could be that the mother Hannah had gone back to her native parish to have her child baptised. She may have gone back to her parents home to have her first child, many girls did this. It could just be that Joseph and Hannah were from elsewhere but moved to Houghton Le Spring because it was close to where Joseph worked and they ended up having their children baptised there, perhaps they moved on from Houghton Le Spring and had more children elsewhere, there are only 5 possible children shown baptised to them at Houghton. The IGI shows bapts. for their possible children Ann 1787, Thomas 1785, Elizabeth 1783, Hannah 1789 as well as Eleanor in 1793 all under the same batch number of P000471 for Houghton Le Spring. I also found the marriage at Houghton Le Spring batch number M000471 for a Joseph Atkison to a Hannah Hills 19th May 1792 which would fit very well with that above baptisms, starting with Elizabeth in 1783. Not all that the LDS has on films is included in the IGI, there is a lot that is sitting in the LDS archive in Salt Lake City but which has not been put into the IGI, but almost all of what is in that archive is available to hire on microfilm at LDS centres around the world. Check the IGI coverage for the parish records of Houghton Le Spring by searching the Family History Library Catalogue at the familysearch site, making a place search for Houghton Le Spring, (remember though that if you put in the name of the County then only put in Durham and not the word County as the LDS dont' recognise the correct title of this county). Then in the list of results of your search look under Church Records to see what films are available to hire and check what dates of those registers the LDS has on film. Then go back to the list of results of your search and look under Church Record Indexes. Looking under Church Record Indexes look for the title "Computer Printout etc,. etc., " that title refers to the LDS computer printouts for that parish and will give you the dates of covereage and the batch numbers to go with them for records that have been included to date into the IGI. You need to look at the link in the top right corner of the page View Film Notes in order to see the dates of coverage. The IGI shows another Eleanor Atkinson bapt., Mar. 1797 on batch number C064861 at Old Meeting or Corn Market Chapel, High St. Sunderland. Where the father is John and the mother is Ann, Hannah and Ann are often interchangable I have found. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain. Dorothy, http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/Transcriptions/DUR/HSP1750.html lists a marriage between Joseph ATKINSON and Hannah HILLS, 19 May 1782, (five years before John A and Hannah Weddel, 13 May 1787). In fact, the marriage between Joseph and Hannah Hills shows up on the IGI for me. If you go back to the IGI and find the baptism record for Eleanor again, you can quickly find the details for several of her siblings. I would be reasonably confident of the following : Ann Christened 27 May 1787 Hannah 05 Apr 1789 Thos. 09 Oct 1785 Elizabeth 15 Jun 1783 The "secret" to finding them is : >From the IGI Individual record for Eleanor's baptism, click on the batch number P000471 in the bottom left corner. That takes you to a new search page, where you can search that batch alone, and for which you don't have to include much detail. Simply enter ATKINSON as the Last Name, and Joseph as the fathers first name - nothing else. Then click on Search.
