Hi Douglas. My father-in-law was born in the 1920s at a place called Liberty Villas which was near Usworth Airfield that became the site of the Nissan Car Factory, I think that maybe this was the Army camp that had been abandoned and folk just moved in to the huts because of a shortage of houses, they were squatters, but not in the same sense as modern day squatters as the Army did not seem to mind. If you look on a modern map of Sunderland and find Southwick on the North side of the River Wear - find Southwick Road and follow it West till you come to North Hylton Road, follow the road west past Hylton Castle ruins and Hylton Castle housing estate till you cross the A19 motorway and you are there, it was in the in the area of the Three Horse Shoes public house. Hope this helps.
