My Great Grandfather James Liddle appears on this Census return along with his 3 brothers and Grandmother. The more I look at this return the more confused I am. The entries concerned are 64 & 65 – 10 Salerna Street Westoe Schedule 64 Mercer, John H 39 Carter Newcastle Mercer, Mary Ann W 35 Sedghill, Northumberland Mercer, Margaret Ann D 12 At school South Shields, Durham Mercer, William Dobby S 10 At School South Shields, Durham Mercer, Elizabeth D 9 At School South Shields, Durham Mercer, Jane D 7 At School **(cant read it), Durham Schedule 65 Logg, Catherine M 49 Fish Dealer Glasgow, Scotland Logg, William S 15 At school South Shields, Durham Logg, John S 12 At school South Shields, Durham Liddle, Robert GS 11 At school South Shields, Durham Liddle, William GS 9 At school South Shields, Durham Liddle, James GS 5 At school South Shields, Durham Liddle, John George GS 2 At school South Shields, Durham This is how I read the Census but if you read the transcribed view on Ancestry instead it lists William and John Logg as Mercer. This also says that Catherine is John (H) mother - according to this census there's only 10yrs difference??? The LIDDLE boy's mother Mary Liddle (nee Logg) died 11/9/1890 from a fall down stairs at home - her husband Robert Liddle was a Mariner - I'm not sure if its him but I found a Robert Liddle in 1891 on the SS Commodore. Thanks to Margaret for the small snippet from the paper about the fall. I'm finding it very difficult to locate the family in other Census returns. In 1881 - RG 11/5020 (page 7 or 36???)
