    2. Bette, Wolf Cleugh was a lead mine in Upper Weardale, County Durham. Details of which can be found on the Durham Mining Museum site at _http://www.dmm.org.uk/colliery/w901.htm_ (http://www.dmm.org.uk/colliery/w901.htm) Whitely Shield was/is a farm near Carr Shield, details here: _http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PDetail?readform&PRN=N7083_ (http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PDetail?readform&PRN=N7083) map here: _http://www.old-maps.co.uk/oldmaps/large_ind.jsp_ (http://www.old-maps.co.uk/oldmaps/large_ind.jsp) to the north of Carr Shield and Blackett Terrace. 3. Keith, Thank you for the links. I had some difficulty making them work but managed to locate the place names using the points of reference that you mentioned in your message. I am a bit conflicted re the Wolfcleugh reference to Co. Durham since I have reason to believe the Wolfcleugh of my interest was in close geographical proximity to Allendale, NBL; near to Ninebanks. The map on the Durham Mining Museum site would not display for me. I did fine with Whiteley Shield however. Best wishes, Bette > Wolf Cleugh was a lead mine in Upper Weardale, County Durham. 3. Hi Bette, there is a Wolf Cleugh in West Allendale, NBL also. Since Whitley Shield is close to it, are you seeking info on ancestors who lived there? I might be able to help if you can let us know what/who you are researching. I am familiar with many of the families in the Allendale area.
