    3. Dear Listers, I have received a 1849 death certificate for a member of my family who died in 1849 @ "Benton, Red Houses", NBL. The occupation was given as "Cartman". The informant's residence was given as "Killingworth". I find on an Internet search... Carman/Charman/Carrier/Carter/Cartman Driver of (horse-drawn) vehicles for transporting goods. Carmen were often employed by railway companies for local deliveries and collections of goods and parcels. Modern day van driver. Also sometimes someone who drove horse-drawn trams was called a Carman. My question ... what was meant by the term "Cartman" during the 1849 time period? Was the job one of pushing a cart and would the cartman's occupation have been associated with the coal mines and miners or would it have been otherwise? Interestingly, at least to me, the cause of death was given as "Epidemic Cholera" something that I suspected since the wife's death occurred two day's prior. Thank you, Bette
