Hi Bette There is a Coalcleugh in the area you speak of near Allenheads and Alston. Also look fo it on maps within the triangle of Alston, Allendale and Allenheads...Regards...Shaun

Hi Bette, Coalcleugh and Whitely Shield are very little distance apart from each other. I drive past them regularly, on the road up to Nenthead to see my mother. Whitely Shield was an old bastle but not much remains of the bastle, but enough to see it. The house next to it has been restored, but was amazing pre-restoration. It looked at though it was the next step up to a bastle. I have friends who still live in Coalceugh. It's a wee bit bleak up there in the winter, (how the old folk managed in the winters, I don't know), but glorious in the summer.
