Hello list- I am looking for my ancestor Eleanor JAMES in Co Durham. I found her birth on FreeBMD, listed in March quarter 1841 as: James, Eleanor Durham, vol 24, page 38. When I ordered this from the GRO, they said "We have not produced a certificate as there is no trace of the above mentioned person at the reference you quoted." Could SKS please take a look at the scan on freeBMD and see if you read it differently, or have any other suggestions as to why this happened and what I should do next? Thanks Jennifer Iowa, USA
Jennifer This seems to be an error on Free BMD as I read the page number as 88 rather than 38 March 1841 Durham &c XXIV However there is another Eleanor James registered in the Mar 1840 Durham &c vol XXIV page 65 and an Eleanor James registered in Gateshead June 1842 XXIV 131, so you should be sure that you have the right one. Before you write to the GRO again, someone else should verify what I found - as the numbers are not that clear. Jennifer, You should be able to order a copy of the certificate direct from Durham County Council. If all goes well, this link should get you to the relevant page: http://www.durham.gov.uk/gro/bi184150.nsf/newintermediate?openform&order=C0561135050405042007$&idpass=bi184150B75DCA8AA7782A1F80256FE20049344D Cheers, Tim S.
Hi Jennifer If you go to the Durham County Council site at the URL below and select from the left hand menu "Registrars Certificates" you can then search for the birth of Eleanor James between the years 1841-1850, no need to put in any other detail. I did this and got two results, one registered in 1841 and the other in 1846. You could vary the year range of your search, perhaps to search 1837-1840 just in case she was born near the end of 1840, there is one shown as born 1840. All three of these entries were at Durham Central office as it happens. If you click on link to the View details of the entry, of either one of the results, you will see that you can order a copy and pay for it on line. You will also see that you can send a query before ordering. If you know the names of your Eleanor James' parents then you can send a query and ask for the entry you have selected to be checked to see if the parents names match with what you have. If it does match then you can order a copy of the entry with confidence that it is the right Eleanor James birth. If it doesn't match then won't have to pay anything and can continue searching for her birth. You could ask for the other entries found to be checked against the parents names you might have, especially that 1840 entry. The URL is http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/Online+Services+-+Durham+County+Council+Information+Service+-+Online+Services You need to get this URL all on one line, just expand this e.mail to full screen to do so. Hope this helps. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain. > I am looking for my ancestor Eleanor JAMES in Co Durham.
