HI Sue, Do you mean you are subscribed to the list in Digest mode and can't open the individual messages within that Digest when it arrives?, this is the only kind of "attachment" that is allowed through the Rootsweb lists that I know of. If this is the problem you are having then ask the list admin. to put your digests in MIME format, the digests should then change to something like they used to be before Rootsweb upgraded their system last autumn. You will find the list admin address in the welcome message, as well as the unsubscribe instructions, that you will have received when you first subscribed to the mailing list. Failing having kept that welcome message then go to the rootsweb site, google for rootsweb mailing lists and find the DUR-NBL list in that way to get all of the information pertaining to this list.
