Samuel Hayes was born in 1800, Bishopwearmouth. The 1841 and 1851 censuses show his occupation to be Tailor. I have also obtained a copy of the Registration of Birth of my G-Grandfather, Samuel's son, on which Samuel's occupation is also listed as Tailor. The 1861 census (when Samuel was 61 years old) lists his occupation as "Tide Waiter (extra man)". I understand the meaning of this occupation. I am in possession of a "sword cane" on which is engraved "Samuel Hayes HM Customs Sunderland 1849" I understand that these canes were used to poke into bags on board ships to see if they hit anything solid. Thus, Samuel seems to have worked for HM Customs. I am wondering if anyone on the list who has some knowledge of HM Customs can comment on this curiosity. Specifically, is it possible that Samuel was a tailor for HM Customs? Did they wear uniforms? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks ... Ralph
