    3. Hi Ralph, Like you, I was unable to read the place where Mark was registered, but I did read that the Reference no. was I, which is the registration district for London and Middlesex. Here is a link for you which has the information on. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/civreg/GROIndexes.html Jan >From Free Bdm Surname First name(s) District Vol Page ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Births Sep 1849 (>99%) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WINTER Mark * * * This person. 3. If it was me I would contact the GRO at Southport using one of the contact addresses on their website and ask them to help, it is after all their index that is at fault and illegible. Give them the details you have found and explain that you can't read the Registration District name nor the volume or page numbers. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ I did this once when I could not make out the volume and page numbers for a death reg. though I could read the district name on the entry I found in the GRO index. It is worth an e.mail to them to see what they can do to help. You will get an automated reply to begin with and will need to respond to it to get through to them and get a proper response, follow the instructions in that automated reply. Where do you think your Mark Winter would have been born? I searched the 1851 for Mark Winter born 2 yrs either side of 1849 and left blank the bodxed for the birth place and place of abode but couldn't turn up a single entry with that name and that span of years anywhere in England. What do you think his parents name would have been? perhaps we can track him through his parents and where they were from? Where would you expect them to be living in the censuses, which county?
