    3. HI Carol, I have my family SMITH at Sedgefield and have also seen those Smiths at Stockton and found some evidience on the Durham CRO Database that there is some link between at least a couple of the Smiths from both Sedgefield and Stockton. John Smith of Stockton a Butcher mentioned his nephew Smith of Sedgefield in his will. I am wondering if some of my Smiths from Sedgefield had moved to Stockton. I have found that one Thomas Smith married a Mary Smith of Portrack Stockton and that Samuel Smith of Sedgefield, my 3x Gt. Grandfather married a Rebecca WHITFIELD of Stockton, though the two places are not very far apart and marriages between people of both places would not be unusual I still think that there must have been a family link between the Smiths of both places sometime earlier on. The trouble is finding that link. This particular Samuel Smith of mine died in 1820 and the will on the Nat. Archives site for Samuel Smith is not for this same Samuel Smith my ancestor. I have the copy of that will from the site and it has left me more confused than ever about these two Smith families. I have Samuel Smith of Sedgefield's family going back through Bishop Middleham into Durham City where an earlier Samuel Smith was born in St. Margaret's parish there. If you want to give me a few details of some of your Smiths I will see what I can find in my notes from having looked at LDS films and see if I can help at all. The parish registers usually do give more detail than what is given in the IGI, the IGI is just an index and indexes are never a full transcription, you need to look at the original source. You probably are aware that you can click on the source call no. in the IGI entry you have found and it will lead you on to find the relevant film number to order a film or two of those PRs. The Barrington period as you know is one where the PRs give much fuller details about the child and his parents and very often his grandparents. Some of these entries give a little more detail than others, it depended on the incumbent and his interpretaion of the Barrington ruling it would seem. So well worth making the effort to use the LDS films, the hire fee is very reasonable. Regards Jenny DeAngelis.
