Hello Nora, I have CARTER relatives who left Co. Durham in the 1840s and 1850s and have had no success either finding them on ship manifests. I'd love to know how they got to the US. This is not a problem with Yorkshire or Irish emigrants from the same era who have been fairly easy to find in passenger records.
