I would bet on it being Waistman or more correctly Wasteman, a Durham term for a man who kept in repair the ventilation roadways in the mine, http://www.dmm.org.uk/educate/mineocc.htm#w. Hoistman does not appear to be a mining term. Stan Mapstone
