    3. Hello Bill,   Trade was slow. The Durham owners (but not Northumberland) wanted a 7.5% reduction in wages. After three ballots, the miners voted overwhelmingly to strike. Strike started 9 March 1892. On the 8th, the owners at Brokenback Colliery near Bishop Auckland issued a notice that no more free coal would be given to the miners - next morning the men struck.   Source: THE IMPENDING STRIKE The Newcastle Weekly Courant (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England), Saturday, March 12, 1892; Issue 11330   THE MINERS' STRIKE The Newcastle Weekly Courant (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England), Saturday, March 19, 1892; Issue 11331   It lasted 12 weeks, wasn't settled until June after the intervention of the Bishop of Durham, and the miners had to take a 10% reduction.   THE END The Newcastle Weekly Courant (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England), Saturday, June 4, 1892; Issue 11342   Regards, Adi --- On Mon, 3/16/09, bill borodenko <[email protected]> wrote: From: bill borodenko <[email protected]> Subject: [DUR-NBL] Miners strike 1892 Gateshead/Durham To: [email protected] Received: Monday, March 16, 2009, 8:02 PM Hi everyone Help needed on this one please In a letter dated "April 1892" a relative writes " I hope you are taking no hurt with the strike".
