I am posting my interest in the surname TODD, and other names associated with the Todd family, in County Durham because I am hoping someone else may have some connection to the family, or families mentioned below, and might be able to help me find the marriage of one of my female Todd ancestors. I have a copy of the Will of Elizabeth Todd who died at Hetton bur. Houghton Le Spring May 1795. In the will Elizabeth mentions Sister Hannah NASBITT Nephews William & Robert NASBITT. The children of her deceased niece Ann SMURTHWAITE late wife of John. Niece Hannah TURPIN wife of William Turpin. Sister Ann TURBITT Nephew Robert TURBITT Niece Elizabeth TURBITT Niece Jane TURBITT Niece Magdalen SMITH wife of Timothy Smith of Bishop Middleham Elizabeth also mentions property in Shincliff, Ferryhill and Houghton le Spring. I also have a copy of the will of Robert TODD of Houghton Le Spring who names the following people. Sister Agnes TURBOTT sister Hanna NAISBIT, nephews Robert and William NAISBIT, sister Elizabeth TODD, niece Ann HUMPHREY and Isabella & Thomas HUMPHREY childfren of niece Anne Humphrey. I have copies of the baptisms of TURBETT children at Trimdon, Magdalen and Ann on same day in 1735, Mary 1737 and Hannah 1739. Father is shown as John Turbett on each entry. I also have baptisms at Witton Gilbert for Robert 1742, Elizabeth 1744 & Jane 1746 father John Turbett. I believe these to be all the same family of Turbett. I have copies of the marriages of Magdalen TURBETT to Timothy SMITH Trimdon 1768, Hannah TURBETT to William TURTON Lanchester 1764, Ann TURBETT to Thomas HUMPHREY Houghton Le Spring 1766 These married names for the Turbett daughters seem to fit with those mentioned in Elizabeth Todd's will, Hannah wife of William Turpin could have been a mis-spelling of surname Turton in the Will. marriage of Ann TODD to John SMURTHWAITE at Sedgefield 1768, this must be the niece mentioned in Robert Todd's will I think. I then have copies of the entries of Burials at Lanchester for Ann Turbett of Holmside Lane, April 1803 aged 90years wife of John Turbett. Also John Turbot of Holmside Lane bur. Lanchester Oct. 1787. Should Ann Turbett have been shown as the widow of John Turbett perhaps? I also found the marriage of Hannah TODD to John NAZBETT at Houghton le spring may 1752 baptisms of Robert Nesbitt Jul. 1753 Bishopwearmouth father John Nesbitt baptism William Nesbitt Sept. 1757 Bishopwearmouth father John Nesbitt. Again these tie into the will of Eliz. Todd and to the will of Robert Todd making this all the same family of Todd. I found on the IGI baptisms at Kirk Merrington of children of Robert Todd, William 1716, robert 1712, Elizabeth 1718, Katherin 1721 and Anne 1714. Could this be Robert and Elizabeth who wrote the wills and their sister Ann who married John Turbett? I found an extract on the Durham CRO database about a William Todd and a parcel of land of his in Hetton in the Hole, this is dated from 1619 so the Todd family must have been in Hetton Le Hole for quite a long time. If anyone can relate to any of the surnames I have mentioned or can add anything at all I would be very grateful if they would contact me. I have been stuck with the Todds and Turbetts for a long time now and would love to get further with them. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain.
