Most often it looks exactly like a y, and it is in this form that it is to this day misunderstood in countless establishments with names like 'ye olde tea shoppe'. When you see 'ye' you are looking at 'þe' and it should be trancscribed as 'the'. Similarly with 'yat' you are looking at 'þat' and should transcribe it as 'that', on the understanding that þ consistently represents 'th'. Stan Mapstone
