    1. [DUR-NBL] Query re WALTON Births & Deaths - Gateshead?
    2. KEMSLEY, Robert N. G.
    3. I've a query in that within my family; there was believed to have been twin girls born to my Grandparents; Robert & Dorothy Ann WALTON (Nee LAYBOURNE); the details are as follows: Twin WALTON girls Born 6 Mar 1905, Gateshead, Durham. All efforts thus far have failed to find, believing them to be have been stillborn? Whilst searching "Free BMD" last night; I stumbled across the birth of Dorothy Ann WALTON and as both my Mother and Grandmother share this name; I thought it to much of a coincidence and more so that the birth took place in 1905, but was registered much later than I would have expected. I then found a Margaret WALTON also born the same time and with the same details. I then went on to check the deaths, finding both died the same time, with slightly differing details and differing Transcribers, but: feel these could very well be the twin girls whom the family believe were born to my Grandparents? The details as from Free BMD are as follows: Births Dec Quarter 1905 : Dorothy Ann WALTON Gateshead District, Vol: 10a Page: 978 Margaret WALTON Gateshead District, Vol: 10a Page: 978 Deaths Dec Quarter 1905: Dorothy Ann WALTON Age: 0, Gateshead District, Vol: 10a Page: 531 Margaret WALTON Age: 0, Gateshead District, Vol: 10a Page: 5[38][38] (Looks to me like 533?) I note that for the births; it's the same Transcriber, but for the deaths, both girls have different Transcribers? Another thing which surprised me and would have assisted me is, that no Mother is shown for both girls? which I had believed; Free BMD show after 1900? Is it possible the girls may have been Christened or is there some way that I may be able to find out about the girls and who their parents were or perhaps obtain Birth & Death certificates for? It's one great mystery, which could very well be now cleared up? I would be most appreciative of any assistance or advice? Regards; Robert KEMSLEY Australia

    3. Hi Robert FreeBMD transcribers are kind volunteers who give up their time to transcribe the General Register Office civil registration indexes. Only a tiny proportion of entries are uploaded by people with a research interest in those entries. The names of the transcribers are therefore almost certainly irrelevant. The maiden name of mothers is only included in the GRO indexes (and therefore on FreeBMD) from part way through 1911, not 1900. The easiest way to order copies of the birth and/or death certificates is to do so directly from the GRO's website, where you can pay by credit card. It costs 7 pounds per cert, postage included. This is the website: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ As there were a number of possible churches in Gateshead at the time, ordering the birth certs will be the fastest and easiest way of finding out about these children. However you can order films of some church records through the nearest LDS Family History Centre - see www.familysearch.org for their on-line film catalogue to see what is available for the area. For earlier records also check the search option & go to pilot record search. Follow the links to view images of Bishops Transcripts for Durham & Northumerland. Note these are partial records, for some years for some C of E parishes only (not all) and no non-conformist records. Except in the case of Catholic registers, neither baptism nor burial records are likely to provide you with the mother's maiden name. A birth certificate will do so. To see what information is on civil registration certs for England & Wales, click on the info tab on FreeBMD & follow the links. Good luck, Ingrid. On 6/05/2009, at 1:37 PM, KEMSLEY, Robert N.
