    2. Doris, Are you sure about the spelling of Mary Ellen's father's name ? You say he was a Frenchman, called Henry Sontrin. I have just checked with the French equivalent of genealogy.com and in their data base (280 million persons) I can find no trace whatsoever of anyone called SONTRIN (which doesn't look right, as a French name, to start with). I tried SOUTRIN, with zero results; but SUTRIN produced two results - one was a wedding in a church just down the road from where I live, in Lyons. Regards, Keith Gordon. Wonder if any one can help ,or point me in the right direction ,any help greatly appreciated Her name was Mary Ellen Southry ,but many spellings on this name Father to Mary Ellen was a French man ,one Henry Sontrin a boat builder Acoording to census she was born in Blyth Northumberland, date of birth about 1845 Many thanks for any information Doris, membership number 6933 ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2011 21:08:45 -0000 From: "Jan Boyes" <markandjanboyes@ntlworld.com> Subject: Re: [DUR-NBL] birth To: "john harker" <john.harker@ntlworld.com>, <DUR-NBL@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <5920A1BE28DB49C5A9B09A21DA6A34EC@JanisPC> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Hi Doris, I've found this on Freebmd site which could be a possibility. Births Jun 1845 LOWRY Mary Ellen Penley Tynemouth 25 414 Have a look on the site at the name, then click on the spectacles at the right hand side of the entry. Click on "View the orignal" then all the names come up. Have a look at two girls names on the image - I'm only going to type their christian names Mary Ellen Sowry - says she is registered at Falmouth. Then underneath her is Hannah Penley - says she is registered at Tynemouth As you can see above, at the transcription, it says that Mary Ellen Penley LOWRY was registered at Tynemouth. I think the transcriber has mixed the two girls up, and that Mary Ellen, should really be Mary Ellen LOWRY (SOWRY - maybe a corruption of SOUTHRY?) I might well be barking up the wrong tree. Would appreciate it if other listers would have a look please, and see what you think. 3. Hi, many thanks to Jenny ,Heather, Karen ,Dawn, & Keith . You have all given me something's to think over ,for years I have tried to find her birth /baptism Here is what I have on this name Marriage of Henry the name is down as Sotrine who married a Sarah Wilson in Sunderland . The name of Henry`s father is William Sotrine On both of the deaths certificate`s the name is Southry of Henry & Sarah. Children I have found ,births & Marriages The names are, first child is down as Sautreet, next child is Southry, next child Southry , next one Southery. all born Sunderland Mary Ellen (who never so far as I know ) used her first name On her marriage she is down as Ellen Southroy this was in 1862 ,I did find her in 1871, but then she went on to remarry twice more after my great grand father died age 37, so next census`s she is down under her new names I have Henry`s ,wife & children on census 1861,1871,1881, 1901 ,apart from Ellen . Perhaps as you all have said she may have been born out of wedlock ,perhaps her mother was not Sarah Wilson , She is the only one I need to complete this family tree ,perhaps I need to resign myself to never finding her birth Oh what a tangle web our ancestors leave to us doing the research I did take into account the different spellings over this name ,and perhaps they had no documents to tell them the correct spelling also dialect comes into it Like on Ellen`s second marriage the name looked as Mofs but it was Moss Sorry to have gone on a bit ,but again many thanks for the help & time you have given Doris ----- Original Message ----- From: <HKGordon37@aol.com> To: <dur-nbl@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 20, 2011 3:10 PM Subject: Re: [DUR-NBL] DUR-NBL Digest, Vol 6, Issue 20 > Doris, > > Are you sure about the spelling of Mary Ellen's father's name ?
